The next few weeks came and went pretty fast. This means today is the day of the Affinity Ceremony.
A kind-looking rotund human man with a glorious mustache wearing a mage robe came into the village from Themascara City. He and some of his guards carted a large crystal ball to the middle of our village and set up the testing area.
He had all the village children line up before the ball and pulled out a clipboard and a writing implement.
"Alright, please step up to the crystal ball and place a hand on it, child."
He gestured to the first in line, Gabriel.
He placed his right hand on the ball and it slowly glowed red, although dimly.
"Hm. You have an affinity to the fire element, but little mana. Fire is useful in combat, so if you want to make the most of your abilities, I suggest you open your mana veins further. Next child, please."
Gabriel looked happy with his element and walked proudly off to the side.
Next up was Julian, of course. He placed his hand on the ball and the crystal flowed just as dimly, but light blue, this time.
"Ah, you have an affinity to the Ice element. You look exactly like the previous child, so I assume you are his twin. I suggest you do the same, as Ice is good for both offense and defense. Also, try not to fight your brother too often."
No wonder the brothers argue so often. They have opposing elements!
Next was Amaranth. She walked up and timidly placed her left hand on the ball. The crystal glowed brightly, enough to blind Amaranth for a moment since she stood right before it.
The bright light slowly shifted colors. Both green and blue danced around each other like yin and yang.
"Ooh! A dual element affinity of Nature and Water! Young lady, with these two elements, and the great amount of mana you possess, you can certainly become a great healer!"
The man jotted Amaranth's information down on his clipboard and spoke to her briefly before gesturing to the next in line.
Henry placed his right hand on the ball and it glowed a little brighter than the Twin's, with a light yellow color.
"You have more mana than average despite not opening your mana veins. Your affinity lies with the Wind element."
Henry nodded and remained stoic as he went to stand near the others who finished.
Next up was me. I'd like to go last, just because that's how the trope goes, but I don't really care rather way.
"…?" The mage looked at me confused for a moment before shaking his head and pointing at the ball.
A case of theft: this story is not rightfully on Amazon; if you spot it, report the violation.
"Please, whenever you're ready."
I placed my right hand on the ball and it immediately flashbanged everyone present.
Once I got used to the light, I looked back to the crystal and found it glowing a light purple.
"Amazing…! I thought my eyes were playing tricks on me when I saw you, but… the sheer amount of mana you possess is beyond extraordinary! And the Lighting Element, as well! A rare genius seen only once every thousand years!"
Alright, settle down old man…
"Child! You absolutely must consider enrolling at Luminaris Academy!"
Oh, I remember reading about that school. Apparently, it's the best and most powerful school in the world, located on a large floating island in the Kingdom of Breynia, located just past the Empire of Alemania neighboring us, on the other side of a large strait.
It's so powerful, that it's treated as a neutral state, where kids with great potential in magic— and rich noble kids— are sent to learn magic.
Sounds… stereotypical. I'm interested, but going to school again…? I don't know.
However, it's probably fine since I doubt the school would waste time teaching math or literature. Maybe I should consider it?
"I'll think about it…"
"Aha! That is fine! Here, this is a letter of recommendation! This can help you greatly in gaining a scholarship!"
Now in such high spirits, the mage gestured to Valerie to come up. She's the last one.
It would be funny if—
"Dear, Gods…!"
It wasn't as bright as mine or Amaranth's but the ball glowed bright enough to inform the mage that Valerie had a lot of mana despite skipping out on mana vein training way too often for my liking.
But the most surprising part…
"Three…! Three affinities…!"
Valerie just shrugged and looked at the shocked mage with furrowed brows. "Is that good, or…?"
"Child…! Dual elements are rare, but only about one in every 10,000 children have dual elements… triple elements, however… one in every ten million! The last recorded triple element mage was more than a thousand years ago!"
"Holy shit, Valy! That's insane!"
I was genuinely shocked to hear that ratio. One in ten million! That's 1 in 10,000,000! Seven zeroes with a one in front of it!
Valerie could be one of maybe two or three people in the world with triple elements. Maybe even the only one.
Maybe she's the main character, huh?
"Is that good?"
I hugged Valerie tight, lifting her off the ground slightly and spinning around once— with the help of enhancement magic, since she's so heavy— and giggled.
"Of course, it's good, Valerie! It's fantastic! You can become even stronger! The strongest in the world!"
Valerie blushed a bit and smiled while glancing away. "O-okay, Luxa… j-just put me down, please…!"
I put the bashful Valerie down and looked at the mage again. He was still shocked, but he managed to write down Valerie's name and her elements.
The ball still shone with a light brown, a dull gray, and a dark purple.
"…Earth, Metal, and Gravity elements…! Inconceivable…"
The Earth element… was self-explanatory. Metal, however, allowed a mage to manipulate metals and change certain properties. Most mages who awaken the metal element often become item or weapon enchanters.
And gravity, well, it allowed a mage to use gravity magic.
A spell to cast less gravity on the user, a spell to increase gravity on an enemy, a spell that can manipulate objects, and if a gravity mage is powerful enough, they can create and close black holes.
To be honest, all those elements fit perfectly for Valerie. Earth because she's tough, Metal because she's obsessed with blunt weapons, and Gravity because she's heavy.
…Ahem.
After that little fiasco, The mage also handed Valerie a recommendation letter to Luminaris Academy in such high spirits, that you almost expect him to fly up in the air at any moment.
When he left, the entire village congratulated all of us with a big hearty feast in the evening.
Gabriel and Julian were a little jealous of Valerie and me but in a good way.
The Twins, Henry, and Amaranth all asked me for rigorous mana vein training so that they might also be able to enroll in Luminaris Academy with Valerie and me if we decide to go.
If they're this determined, I'll train them hard.
Of course, I'd also really like it if we all stick together when we’re older.
