Chapter Seven: The Blind Blade. Part Five.

When Ife entered her room, she immediately noticed that something was wrong.

The jewellery box was not where it should have been, nor was the cosmetics box. She rushed to the chest of clothes and hurriedly moved it aside to check the inscriptions left on the wall: they were intact and undamaged, which made her breathe a sigh of relief. Then, putting the chest back in its place, she opened it and checked for the writing stick she had made herself — it was there too.

She went to the jewellery box, opened it and checked that nothing was missing; she was honest with herself that she did not remember all the jewellery that was in there, but it seemed to her that nothing had changed in terms of how full it was, so she closed the box again. Approaching another box and opening it, she saw the incredibly beautiful headdress that the Prince had given her on the day she finally woke up after the incident in the throne room. Realising that the jewellery was also there made her breathe a sigh of relief.

She went over to the cosmetics bag, opened it, and saw a makeup applicator that had not been there before.

Her heart skipped a beat; nothing was missing, but the appearance of something was no less alarming, because it meant that someone had entered her room, and even if they had left no obvious traces of their presence, they could well have seen the inscriptions carved on the wall behind the chest.

Ife rushed to the exit and, opening the door, asked Zafir:

"Did someone enter my room while I was away?"

Zafir frowned, slightly puzzled by Ife's sharp reaction, but he put it down to her unwillingness to let anyone else touch her things without her permission; even though they weren't her things, he understood her behaviour.

  "Yes," he replied simply.

  "Who?"

"Prince Arenor," he added. "He came in to leave you a makeup wand, and he also asked me to tell you not to try to kill yourself anymore, otherwise he will not only take away all your sharp objects, but also make you sleep with him so he can control your every move."

Ife's face flushed at Zafir's words.

"Tell him he's an idiot," she said, slamming the door without waiting for Zafir's reply.

Her face was burning, but her heart was no longer beating as anxiously as before.

"Apparently, he really was just bringing me a makeup stick," she thought, lying down on the bed relaxed, after taking another dose of sleeping pills.

And so she fell asleep, unaware that behind another chest, there was an inscription on the wall that read, "I swear that this time, I will keep my promise.”
