Three weeks passed in the valley.
Three weeks of winter's deepest cold, when the snow piled so high that the keep's main gate became difficult to open. Three weeks of huddling by fires and rationing supplies and praying that spring would come before the wraiths returned. Three weeks of training, teaching, and waiting.
Kaelen used every moment.
Each morning, he visited the forge to check on Lyra and Korra's progress. The collaboration that had begun so tentatively was now a daily rhythm—Korra shaping metal while Lyra inscribed, Lyra sketching runes while Korra critiqued, both of them arguing and laughing and creating in equal measure. The masterwork steel he'd given them sat in the corner, still untouched, waiting for the moment when theory became practice.
"You're hovering again," Korra said one morning, not looking up from her work.
"I'm observing."
"You're hovering. There's a difference." She set down her hammer and fixed him with her storm-cloud eyes. "Look. I know you're impatient. You want results. You want to see if your investment was worth it. But this kind of work—real work, the kind that changes things—it takes time. You can't rush revolution."
"I'm not rushing anything."
"You're standing in my forge every morning at dawn. That's rushing." But she was smiling as she said it. "Go check on the elf. She's been muttering about resonance patterns for three days straight. I think she's close."
He found Lyra in her corner of the forge, surrounded by sketches and notes. Her ice-blue eyes were distant, focused on something only she could see. The masterwork steel sat before her, and on its surface, she had drawn a single rune in charcoal.
"The problem," she said without looking up, "is that living runes need to resonate with the material's natural frequency. Every metal has one—a kind of song it sings at the molecular level. If the rune matches that frequency, the metal accepts it. If not..." She gestured vaguely. "I've been trying to calculate the resonance pattern for this steel for a week."
"And?"
"And I think I've got it." She looked up, and there was something fierce in her expression. "Theoretically. On paper. In my head." She gestured at the steel. "But if I'm wrong, I'll ruin it."
Kaelen considered for a moment. "What does Korra think?"
Lyra blinked, as if the question hadn't occurred to her. "I... haven't asked."
"Maybe you should. She knows metal better than anyone."
Lyra was silent for a moment. Then, slowly, she nodded. "You're right. Annoyingly, you're right." She stood and walked to where Korra was working. "Dwarf. I need your opinion."
Korra looked up, surprised. "My opinion? On elf magic?"
"On metal. The resonance frequency. Does this pattern make sense for this alloy?"
Korra examined the sketch, her expression shifting from skepticism to concentration. "Huh. That's... actually not stupid. The crystalline structure of this steel would resonate at something close to that. But you're off by about three degrees on the spiral. See here?" She pointed. "If you adjust this curve to follow the grain, you'll get better flow."
Lyra studied the sketch, then looked at Korra with something like respect. "You can see the grain structure just by looking?"
"I can feel it. Two hundred years of hammering metal, you develop instincts." Korra shrugged. "Elf magic is your thing. Metal is mine. Together, we might actually pull this off."
They looked at each other for a long moment—dwarf and elf, traditional enemies, now collaborators.
"Together," Lyra agreed quietly.
Kaelen slipped out of the forge, a smile tugging at his lips.

That afternoon, Sera found him in the workshop.
She came alone—Kito was with Lian, learning tracking techniques in the snow. Her golden eyes were troubled, her tail flicking nervously behind her.
"The empty spaces," she said without preamble. "They're... changing."
Kaelen's heart rate ticked up. "Changing how?"
"Getting stronger. More urgent." She wrapped her arms around herself. "It's like the valley is hungry. Waiting. Three empty spaces, but one of them feels different from the others. Bigger. Older. Like it's been waiting a long time."
Kaelen thought of the dragon—the final student, the one who would come last of all. Sera was sensing it already, even from this distance.
"What do you think it means?" he asked carefully.
"I don't know. That's what scares me." She looked up at him, her golden eyes searching. "You know something. I can feel it. The same way I feel the empty spaces."
Kaelen was silent for a long moment. The Watcher's words echoed in his mind: Trust is a garden. It grows best in sunlight.
"Sera," he said slowly, "what I'm about to tell you is a secret. The biggest secret I have. Can you keep it?"
She nodded without hesitation. "I've kept secrets my whole life. Yours will be safe with me."
He told her.
About his past life as Leo. About the system. About the multipliers and returns and student slots. About how her growth made him stronger, and how he'd known from the moment he saw her that she was special.
A case of literary theft: this tale is not rightfully on Amazon; if you see it, report the violation.
When he finished, Sera was quiet for a long time.
"So the empty spaces," she said finally. "They're slots. For more students."
"Yes."
"And the big one—the one that feels different—that's someone important."
"The most important. A dragon. Young, alone, searching for purpose. She'll come last, when we're ready for her."
Sera processed this. Then, slowly, she smiled—a real smile, warm and genuine.
"You trust me," she said. "Really trust me. Enough to tell me your biggest secret."
"You're family, Sera. Family keeps each other's secrets."
She lunged forward and hugged him—fierce and sudden, her small frame pressing against his. Kaelen hugged her back, feeling the warmth of her bond through the system.
"Thank you," she whispered. "For seeing me. For trusting me. For everything."
"You're welcome. Always."

That evening, the forge exploded.
Not literally—though Korra's shout of triumph was loud enough to wake half the keep. Kaelen ran to find both women standing over the workbench, staring at a piece of metal that glowed with faint, internal light.
"We did it," Lyra whispered. "We actually did it."
The masterwork steel lay before them, now inscribed with a rune that pulsed gently, rhythmically, like a heartbeat. The metal itself seemed different—softer somehow, more alive. When Kaelen touched it, he felt warmth, and something else. Recognition.
"It knows me," he said wonderingly.
"It knows everyone," Korra corrected. "Living metal with living runes. It's aware. Not like us—not thinking—but aware. It'll bond with whoever wields it. Grow with them. Adapt to their needs." She looked at Lyra with something like awe. "You did it, elf. You actually did it."
"We did it," Lyra said firmly. "Your metal. My runes. Together."
They looked at each other, and for the first time, there was no rivalry in their eyes. Only respect. Only pride.
Kaelen felt the system hum.

The knowledge slammed into Kaelen like a tidal wave.
He understood everything. Every principle Lyra had discovered, every technique Korra had developed, every nuance of the synthesis between living runes and living metal. He could create it himself now—not just replicate their work, but improve upon it. Scale it. Teach it.
And the creative innovation essence—that was new. A permanent boost to his ability to think creatively, to see connections others missed, to solve problems in novel ways.
He staggered, catching himself on the workbench.
"Kaelen?" Lyra's voice was sharp with concern. "Are you alright?"
"Fine." He forced the word out. "Just... overwhelmed. You two just made history. Do you understand that?"
They looked at each other, then back at the glowing metal.
"We made history," Korra said slowly, as if testing the words. "Together."
"Together," Lyra agreed.
Kaelen smiled despite the spinning in his head. "Then let's celebrate. Marta's been saving a cask of ale for a special occasion. I think this qualifies."

The celebration lasted late into the night.
Marta's ale flowed freely. Korra told stories of her clan that made even Lyra laugh. Sera danced with Kito, the wolf's tail wagging furiously. Lian watched from the shadows, a rare smile on her weathered face. Elara sat close to Kaelen, her shoulder warm against his.
And at the center of it all, Lyra and Korra sat side by side, the glowing metal between them, their faces alight with an achievement that would echo through history.
"You did it," Kaelen said quietly to Elara. "All of you. This is what I wanted—what I hoped for. People coming together to create something greater than themselves."
Elara squeezed his hand. "You gave them the space to do it. The resources. The belief." She looked at him, her grey eyes soft. "That's not nothing."
"It's everything." He kissed her forehead. "You're everything."
She flushed and leaned into him. "Keep talking like that and I'll never let you go."
"Promise?"
"Promise."
They sat together, surrounded by their strange, wonderful family, and for a moment, the world was perfect.

Later, when the celebration wound down and the others stumbled off to bed, Kaelen stood on the battlements alone.
Well, not entirely alone. The Watcher's presence was faint but constant.
Your flock grows, little catalyst. Five now. Soon six. Then seven. Then the last.
"You've been watching."
Always. And I must say—this is the most entertaining thing I've seen in millennia. An elf and a dwarf, creating miracles together. A cat-kin sensing empty spaces. An alchemist brewing beyond her rank. A ranger finding purpose again. The Watcher's amusement rippled. You collect broken things and make them whole. It's... beautiful.
Kaelen smiled. "That's the nicest thing you've ever said to me."
Don't get used to it. I'm still watching. Still waiting. Still easily bored. A pause. But tonight, little catalyst, I am not bored. Tonight, I am satisfied.
The presence faded, leaving Kaelen alone with the stars and the snow and the warm glow in his chest.
Five students now. Two empty slots, plus the dragon waiting in the wings.
The valley was growing.
And so was he.

[Investment Ledger - End of Chapter 16]
Big milestone chapter!
Lyra and Korra finally achieved their first real breakthrough together. What started as rivalry has turned into genuine collaboration—and the result might change a lot more than just the valley.
Sera also now knows Kaelen’s biggest secret. Trust is powerful, but secrets can change relationships. Hopefully Kaelen made the right call.
And with Lyra and Korra reaching Novice rank, a new student slot has unlocked. That means the valley is one step closer to gathering the full group.
Curious what everyone thinks:
? Did Kaelen make the right choice telling Sera about the system?
? What do you think the living rune metal could eventually become? Weapons? Armor? Something else entirely?
Thanks for reading!
