Chapter Nine

Lady and Heather headed for Heather's red minivan. After Lady placed Rose in her baby seat in the back she joined Heather in the front. Sitting on the passenger's side while heather sat behind the wheel and started the van up. Taking it out of the driveway and onto the main streets of Topeka.

“You're sure this woman will be able to help us?” asked Heather.

“Miss Martha is a seer,” explained Lady. “If anybody can guess why the demons are going after your baby then it's her.”

“I hope you're right,” replied Heather.

The van headed towards what appeared to be a mostly deserted neighborhood in Topeka. Coming up to an old brown duplex at the end of the road. Heather and Lady both climbed out of the van and Heather opened the back to pick up Rose and carry her to the door with Lady. Lady knocked on the door and waited.

The door slowly creaked open as a pair of big old brown eyes looked outside the door.

“Who is it?” asked the old lady.

  “Lady,” answered the Hellspawn.

The door swung open and the old woman welcomed Lady with open arms. “Lady my good friend! It's been years and you haven't aged a day.”

Lady accepted the hug and smiled towards the seer. “Benefits of walking in immortality.”

“Indeed,” replied the old woman. “As long as the Earth turns you will be. Come in! Come in!”

The old woman went back into her living room and Lady and Heather followed in behind her. There was a rusty old brown rug and dirty white walls with cracks in the ceiling. Yet the old woman seemed to find the place as good as new. Just like home. The seer led them to the kitchen where her table was all set up.

“I trust you came here for a reason,” said the old woman.

“I have,” replied Lady. “This is my good friend Heather and her daughter Rose. Just a few days ago a demon by the name of Legion attacked our home with the intent of killing Rose. We want to know why.”

The old woman's eyes grew bigger as she looked at the baby in question. “Curious. Very curious. May I see?”

Heather glanced at Lady hesitant. But Lady merely nodded. “It's okay. You can trust her.”

Heather went ahead and handed Rose over to the seer. The seer smiled at the baby and held her close as she paced around the table.

“Oh yes! A good healthy baby girl! You must be proud.”

The old seer then looked into the baby's eyes and saw a great wonder. She was silent for a long time, which made Lady expect she knew something important, as the old seer finally broke her silence:

“Yes... I see a bright light in this child's future. A strong purpose of being. She will bring many to Him.”

  “To who?” asked Heather.

  “God,” answered the seer.

“What are you saying?” asked Lady.

“This baby is destined to become a prophet,” explained the old woman. “That is why the demons want her dead before she can carry out her mission.”

Heather looked immediately distraught at the idea of her daughter being used by God while Lady stood there with a stern look on her face. Unsure of what to say or do in response as Heather took her baby back.

“This is not the life I want for her,” said Heather.

“Don't worry,” replied Lady. “God gave us all free will. Rose has the right to choose what kind of life she wants to live. Whether she follows her calling or find a new one.”

“Indeed,” said the seer. “But is it wise to turn back the hand of God?”

“We're done here,” said Lady. “Come on, Heather.”

Heather didn't have to be told twice. She followed Lady out with Rose in her arms and the three returned to the minivan. Whatever life Rose chose for herself remained to be seen. Lady would not interfere with that. She would protect Rose's life no matter what. But before she could grow up to make such a decision...

They had to protect her now.
