Protection can be a softer word for isolation.

  Eli was not punished.

  That was the problem.

  The meeting lasted twelve minutes.

  No raised voices.

  No accusations.

  Just calm conclusions.

“It’s for your well-being,” the counselor said.

“You’ve been under a lot of pressure.”

  The word pressure sounded generous.

  Eli’s timetable changed.

  Different classroom.

  Different lunch period.

  Independent study twice a week.

  Nothing officially taken away.

  Everything quietly relocated.

  Teachers checked in more often.

  “How are you feeling today?

”“Let us know if things get

  overwhelming.”

No one asked about the notebook.

  No one mentioned the questions.

  They talked only about Eli.

As if the issue had always been him.

“They’re shrinking your world,” Milo said.

  Eli looked around.

  Smaller room.

  Fewer faces.

“But they’re calling it help,” Eli replied.

  Milo nodded.

  “That’s how it works.”

  That night, Eli wrote:

When a system can’t erase a message,

  it isolates the messenger.

  Eli wasn’t excluded.

  He was protected.

  And protection, he realized,

  could feel exactly like disappearance.
