Chapter 16: The Spitting Resemblance.
~~~ [START]
“Nah, I just… can’t believe you came,” Troy said, smiling while shaking Mr Macon’s, Gina’s uncle’s, hand. “Gina said you wouldn’t—”
“I wouldn’t, what?!” The man raised both hands into clenched fists. “You think I’m old or somethin’?”
“Huh?”
“Psh… I’m just pulling your leg, kid.” He laughed while slapping Troy on his shoulder, chuckling after his chuckles.
Mr Macon sighed, turning his head to a dirty truck which was parked beside them, “Just make sure you take care of her.”
Troy smiled and threw him a car key. Nearly laughing at the man's sudden frown.
“It’s Gina’s.” Troy said, “She has practice, so… there’s no need for a taxi; just take her car.”
“That fart.” Mr Macon just shook his head, walked to Gina’s car without direction, hooted to Troy, and drove off.
Troy turned his eyes to his truck, sighing at its body, which was draped in evidence of rust.
It was a 1991 Ford Sky Ranger, something that was both beautiful and ugly. And although it had a lot of problems, the price he was charged gave him a glimpse of how truly generous Mr Macon was. Even though he couldn’t tell if that generosity came from stupidity or aimless desperation.
“Sup,” Troy said through the phone, laughing when Honey started murmuring from the other end. “Yeah, I’ll be there… No, I’m not wearing… No, I’m not wearing a costume.”
His eyes turned to the moon above him. It was nearing 7 PM.
“Okay, and tell Gina her uncle pulled up… Yeah, I gave him the car… bet.”
The call cut.
Troy walked and entered the car, then after a couple of failed attempts, the engine roared, and he drove off.
{ELSEWHERE}
Troy pulled up to a gas station, got out, and then started pouring some gas. The truck’s fuel gauge didn’t work, so Troy had to judge by instinct.
Then, with his head still turned to the fuel pump, a car pulled up beside him.
If you stumble upon this narrative on Amazon, be aware that it has been stolen from Royal Road. Please report it.
It was a bright orange Porsche, which, for some unknown reason, was driving at little speed.
Troy’s hand tightened around the pump when he smelt the person within; it was a vampire. He wouldn’t mistake it.
So, his muscles tightened, eyes sharpening for war. Even after the gas from the pump finished pouring, as if sensing his instinct.
But, unexpectedly.
“Hey.” The voice lacked all hints of sharpness. It was soft, well-spoken, and feminine.
Then, right as Troy turned, his eyes widened, his fingers trembled, and his hand dropped the fuel pump to the floor.
“You alright?” The girl, who was now standing in front of him, asked.
Troy failed to answer, and he almost backed away.
But the girl giggled when he nearly tripped over the pump line, which was twisted behind him.
“Yeah, hey.” Troy’s eyes didn’t turn from her golden pupils.
The girl frowned while moving her hand. “Is something on my face?”
“No, no, you just… sorry, you just look like someone.” Troy blinked, vanquishing the non-existent tears that were starting to form in his eyes.
The girl’s expression shifted in an instant. Head turned sideward.
“Help me.” She said, moving backward and pouting at the gas pump. “It’s heavy.”
Troy’s heart skipped; that was the moment he realised that she didn’t know what he was.
He hesitated, perhaps for a moment too much, then moved forward, lifted the pump stationed beside her car, and started pouring it in, right after she opened the fuel cap.
She neared him. Too close. Too much. “I’m Alice.”
And the name flickered in his subconscious; It had to be a coincidence.
“Oh, I’m Tro—”
“Troy, I know.” She finished his words.
He blinked, “Huh? Are you… following me?”
She laughed at the question, and he forced a chuckle.
“No, I’m serious.”
She tapped him on the arm, “Relax, Mrs Carina said you joined the group.”
“Miss Carina?”
“The art teacher—”
“Yeah, I know, it’s just…” Troy pulled the pump out, cutting the subject. “It’s done.”
“Thanks.” Alice’s smile brightened.
Troy immediately made his way to his car, an attempt to leave.
But he noticed that the gas pump in his section was still inserted within his fuel tank.
Then Alice, suddenly, in that instant, arrived right beside it, pulled it out, and returned it where it belonged.
Troy’s eyes flickered for a moment. “So it’s not heavy?”
“We’re even.” She didn’t truly answer him. She just moved to her car, revved its engine, then drove away.
And it vanished far faster than it should.
Troy’s eyes lingered on its shadow, his mind doubting what he had seen.
She resembled ‘her’ too much; he wouldn’t dare mistake it.
—---
{ELSEWHERE}{MINUITES LATER}
In a double-story building, filled with blinding light, and teens dancing on its roof, and in unprecedented places.
Troy walked in, immediately rejecting a drunk girl who offered him a glass of beer when he entered, screaming the words ‘I’m drunk!’ as if it weren’t already evident.
Then there she was, Honey. Standing near Gina, who was, for some reason, in an intimate kiss with a short blonde.
Honey instantly smiled when she saw him.
She walked forward, while the white feathers of her costume brushed against all she passed.
Until, in moments, she was standing a breath from him. Her head turned upward to his face, lifted because of his towering figure.
“You’re freakishly tall,” She said, head tilting with a smile, “you know that, right?”
Troy bent down without question, then with swiftness, they kissed.
Starting a deed that would never be taken back. No matter what was to come.
