Chp 40 - All Rank S Gather

  Several days later…

The morning sun filtered through the tall windows of Grandmaster Alaric's office, casting long shadows across the polished oak desk.

The room was spacious yet cluttered, filled with maps, ancient tomes, and various magical artifacts that spoke of decades of guild leadership.

A massive painting of Eldervale's founding hunters dominated one wall, while shelves lined with mission reports and guild records covered the others.

Emberlyn arrived first, as was her habit for important meetings. She sat in one of the leather chairs facing Alaric's desk, her crimson hair catching the morning light.

Her posture was relaxed yet alert, the bearing of someone accustomed to command.

Lucas entered moments later, his polished armor gleaming and his confident smile firmly in place.

"Good morning, Emberlyn," he said warmly, taking the seat beside her. "Beautiful day for whatever mission the Grandmaster has planned for us."

"Indeed," Emberlyn replied with a small nod, though her mind was elsewhere. She'd been thinking about her recent visits to Rivermoor, about the children, and Ethan.

Grandmaster Alaric emerged from behind a towering stack of documents, his large frame filling the space behind his desk. His weathered face bore the scars of countless battles, but his eyes twinkled with their usual mischief.

"Ah, my two finest hunters!" he boomed, settling into his chair with a grunt. "Right on time, as always. Though I suppose being late would be quite the rank violation, wouldn't it? Get it? Rank? Because you're both S-rank?" He chuckled at his own joke.

Emberlyn sighed quietly while Lucas managed a polite smile. They'd grown accustomed to Alaric's questionable sense of humor over the years.

"Before we begin," Alaric continued, his expression growing slightly more serious, "we're waiting for one more person."

Lucas raised an eyebrow. "Another hunter? For what kind of mission do you need three teams?"

"Not three teams," Alaric said with a mysterious grin. "Three S-rank hunters."

Both Emberlyn and Lucas straightened in their chairs, shock evident on their faces.

"Three S-rank hunters?" Emberlyn repeated slowly. "But that's impossible. There are only two S-rank hunters in all of Eldervale."

"Were," Alaric corrected, clearly enjoying their surprise. "There were only two. But that number has grown, just recently, to three."

Lucas leaned forward, his usual composure slipping. "Who? When? How did someone achieve S-rank without us knowing?"

"Oh, you'll find out soon enough," Alaric said cryptically. "He's quite remarkable, actually. Been operating quietly for some time now."

Before either could respond, a soft knock echoed through the room.

"Come in!" Alaric called out cheerfully.

The door opened with a soft creak that somehow commanded more attention than if it had been slammed. Both seasoned hunters turned their heads, expecting to see some legendary figure step through, perhaps an older warrior who had been hiding his true strength, or a mysterious newcomer with obvious power radiating from every pore.

Instead, they saw Ethan standing there.

The silence that followed was deafening.

Lucas's friendly expression froze on his face as recognition dawned. His eyes hardened momentarily before he quickly masked his reaction with his practiced smile.

Ethan! What is he doing here? Did he get lost? Is he delivering a message? he thought.

Emberlyn's eyes widened in genuine surprise, her heart skipping a beat. "Ethan?" The name escaped her lips before she could stop it, but this time it carried a different weight.

Alaric looked between them with interest. "Oh, you two know each other?"

"We've... met," Emberlyn said carefully, not wanting to reveal the true nature of their encounters, her mind still reeling from the revelation. How could I have been so blind?

Lucas's jaw clenched almost imperceptibly as he watched the exchange between them.

"Actually," Alaric interjected, rising from his chair with obvious delight at the revelation, "meet Ethan Culver, Eldervale's newest S-rank hunter. Quite the surprise, wouldn't you say?"

The silence in the room was deafening. Lucas's jaw clenched almost imperceptibly, while Emberlyn stared at Ethan with a mixture of confusion and something else she couldn't quite identify.

Ethan nodded politely to both of them. "Good morning, Emberlyn. Lucas." His voice was calm, betraying nothing of the complex emotions beneath the surface.

Alaric leaned forward, his eyes gleaming with mischief.

"Oh, and in case the name didn't already ring a bell, if you've heard the rumors flying around the guild these past few months, about a mysterious hunter clearing out the entire mission board at lightning speed…" He gestured toward Ethan with a flourish. "He's the guy."

Lucas's expression faltered, and Emberlyn's eyes widened.

  Alaric chuckled.

"Yes, that shortage of missions everyone's been complaining about? Our guild board is nearly empty day after day? That was because of him. I confirmed it myself. Ethan's been operating under the radar, but every completed mission, every flawless report, every impossible turnaround, it all pointed back to him. I'd say he's earned the title of chaos-bringer, wouldn't you?"

Now Emberlyn remembered Lina's voice at the guild counter, speaking with wide-eyed excitement about the mysterious hunter who had been clearing the mission board at an impossible rate.

I never thought it was him, Emberlyn mused, her thoughts swirling. He always seemed like such an ordinary person in Rivermoor, the way he treated the children, his calm, casual demeanor… Everything about him looked so normal.

Ah… is this all for his wife? The realization hit her with unexpected weight. He became this strong… just to find her.

A soft ache bloomed in her chest. She's lucky, Emberlyn thought, her expression turning wistful. To have someone who would move mountains just to reach her. She looked down, unable to stop the quiet sadness that crept into her eyes.

Emberlyn leaned back slightly, still processing the information. "So all those rumors… the hunter no one could catch a glimpse of... that was you?"

Ethan gave a small nod, his voice still quiet. "I wasn't trying to cause problems. I just... I needed the money. Badly."

So, he was doing all that for the children, she realized, her heart twisting. All those missions… the long hours, the risk… it wasn't for glory. It was to keep them fed, warm, and safe.

Emberlyn was amazed, deeply moved by the quiet strength and selflessness behind his actions.

"Sometimes the most capable hunters prefer to avoid the spotlight. Ethan here has demonstrated abilities that far exceed our normal S-rank requirements," Alaric explained, settling back into his chair.

He then leaned forward slightly, his tone shifting to something more serious. "So, in order to test his real strength and qualification, I gave him one of our most dangerous classified missions. A solo assignment no one else dared to take."

He smiled, almost in admiration. "And he succeeded, flawlessly."

Lucas found his voice, though it carried a slight edge despite the attempt at warmth.

"Congratulations, Ethan. Quite the surprise." His smile was flawless, practiced, but his eyes remained sharp and calculating.

How can he be this strong in just two years? Lucas thought bitterly. He was nobody before... weak, useless.

His hand clenched tightly at his side, the tension betraying the calm facade he worked so hard to maintain.

"Thank you," Ethan replied simply, taking the remaining chair across from them.

Alaric clapped his hands together, clearly relishing the moment.

"Now that we're all acquainted, or getting acquainted, as the case may be, let me tell you why I've gathered Eldervale's three S-rank hunters in one room. And before you ask, no, it's not because I've run out of bad jokes. Though speaking of jokes, what do you call an S-rank hunter who's afraid of the dark? A night-mare!" He burst into laughter at his own pun.

The three hunters exchanged glances. Emberlyn rubbed her temples while Lucas's smile became even more strained.

"Right, moving on," Alaric continued, wiping tears from his eyes. "The reason I've called you all here is because we have a situation that demands your combined expertise and strength."

The atmosphere in the room shifted immediately. All three hunters leaned forward, their attention focused.

"A powerful and ancient artifact has been discovered in Black Wood Forest," Alaric began, his tone now completely serious. "This artifact, the Crystal of Elaria, has the potential to alter the balance of power in our entire region. In the wrong hands, it could spell disaster for everyone we've sworn to protect."

Emberlyn nodded thoughtfully, though she kept stealing glances at Ethan. The revelation of his true rank had shaken her more than she cared to admit. "What kind of disaster are we talking about, Grandmaster?"

"The artifact can amplify magical abilities to unprecedented levels," Alaric replied gravely. "If a malevolent force were to acquire it, they could potentially level cities, control armies, or reshape the very fabric of magic itself."

Lucas whistled softly, his bravado notably absent for once. "So it's a world-ender type of situation. Why don't we just destroy it?"

"It's not that simple," Alaric said, shaking his head. "The Crystal of Elaria is protected by ancient magic that makes it virtually indestructible through conventional means. Our best option is to retrieve it and secure it within the guild's vault, where it can be kept safe and out of reach of those who might misuse it."

Ethan, who had been listening quietly, spoke up with the kind of tactical thinking that made both other hunters pay attention despite their surprise.

"What do we know about who else might be after this artifact? And what defenses are we likely to encounter?"

His question was precise and strategic, revealing a depth of experience that contradicted his recent emergence as an S-rank hunter.

Alaric's expression darkened. "We've received intelligence that a notorious dark mage named Malakar is also seeking the Crystal. He's ruthless, cunning, and commands a cadre of powerful followers. If he gets his hands on the artifact..." He left the sentence hanging, the implications clear.

Emberlyn's eyes narrowed with determination. "So we're not just retrieving the artifact, we're racing against Malakar and potentially fighting his forces."

"Precisely," Alaric confirmed. "This mission will require perfect coordination, strategic thinking, and every ounce of strength you can muster. That's why I've assembled our three S-rank hunters. You represent the pinnacle of Eldervale's strength."

Lucas cracked his knuckles, though the gesture seemed more nervous than confident. "Sounds like quite the party. When do we leave?"

"Tomorrow at dawn," Alaric replied. "I want each of you to bring your own teams. Lucas, Emberlyn, you know your people best. Choose whoever you trust most for this mission."

Ethan remained silent, his expression thoughtful.

Alaric noticed his silence. "Ethan, if you need recommendations for team members, I can provide—"

"I work alone," Ethan said quietly but firmly.

Lucas raised an eyebrow. "Alone? Against Malakar and his forces?"

"I've always worked alone," Ethan replied, his tone leaving no room for argument. "It's how I operate best."

Emberlyn felt a strange pang of concern at his words, though she couldn't understand why the thought of him facing danger alone bothered her so much.

"Very well," Alaric said, nodding approvingly. "Sometimes the lone wolf approach is the most effective. What's our strategy? Direct assault or stealth infiltration?"

"That will be up to you three to decide once you're in the field," Alaric continued. "I have complete faith in your judgment. The important thing is that we secure the Crystal before Malakar does."

"We'll get the artifact," Emberlyn said firmly, "and we'll stop Malakar."

  Alaric smiled with genuine pride.

"I knew I could count on you all. Take the rest of today to prepare yourselves and gather your teams. Oh, and try not to kill each other before the mission starts. That would be quite the team-building exercise! Get it? Building? Like constructing a team?" He chuckled again.

This time, even Ethan couldn't suppress a slight wince at the terrible joke.

As they prepared to leave, Lucas stood first, his movements controlled and measured. "I should gather my team and check our equipment," he said, his voice carefully neutral.

Then, he glanced briefly at Emberlyn before turning his gaze to Ethan, his chin slightly lifted, eyes cold, looking down at him in quiet judgment.

"Congratulations again, Ethan. I look forward to seeing what makes you S-rank material."

It sounded like a compliment, but Ethan recognized it for what it was, a veiled threat.

Ethan simply nodded. "Thank you, Lucas. I'm sure we'll work well together."

After Lucas left, closing the door perhaps a bit too firmly behind him, Emberlyn found herself alone with Ethan and Alaric. The Grandmaster was already buried in his paperwork, leaving them in relative privacy.

She hesitated, then turned slightly toward Ethan. "Hey," she said, her voice lower now, almost hesitant. "Congratulations… on the promotion. S-rank. That's not a small thing."

Ethan looked at her then, the tension in his shoulders easing just a little. "Thanks."

A pause lingered between them, not uncomfortable, but charged with something unspoken. Emberlyn glanced away first, her fingers curling slightly at her sides. "I'm glad you're with us on this," she added, softer this time. "Even if you insist on doing everything alone."

He gave a small, almost imperceptible smile. "Some habits are hard to break."

She nodded, then turned toward the door. "See you at dawn."

The soft rustle of her cloak followed her steps as she left the room, leaving Ethan once more in the quiet company of shadows and old paper.
