Forward momentum has officially resumed. I am currently editing and finalizing Chapter 41.
Based on a (very) rough projection of about 120 total chapters to reach the same narrative point as the currently posted version, completing Chapter 41 puts the rewrite at approximately 34 percent complete.
That number is obviously based on estimates and could shift as the structure evolves, but seeing that percentage climb feels good. It reinforces in my mind that real progress is being made, which helps me a lot to stay focused and motivated.
Max Storyline Structure
After completing the full reread and restructuring that turned 27 chapters into 37, I pushed ahead and began weaving Max’s storyline back into the rewrite.
His first quest has been reworked into a three chapter interlude at roughly 10,500 words, compared to the original 11,500. It is slightly tighter, but not drastically reduced. I made that choice deliberately.
One of the main reasons I am not cutting Max’s storyline as aggressively as I once considered is emotional weight. If I trim too much, I risk reducing the impact of his eventual reunion or intersection with Grub. That convergence needs to matter.
Original Structure for Reference
- Quest 1, Crestwood Farm
3 chapters, ~11,500 words
3 chapters, ~14,500 words
- Quest 3, Caravan investigation and Harvest kidnappings
2 chapters, ~16,000 words
- Final arc before Highreach
7 chapters, ~30,500 words

I've since come to realize that one of the original issues was not just the presence of Max’s perspective, but the structure of it as well.
There were too many chapters in the 4,500 to 6,000 word range, and even a couple pushing into 7,000 or 8,000 words. Combined with staying on Max for long uninterrupted stretches, that made his sections feel heavy and jarring.
The rewrite fixes that, I hope. Here is my current plan:
Revised Plan
- Quest 2
Likely 4 chapters at 3,000 to 3,500 words each.
- Quest 3
4 to 5 chapters at roughly 3,000 words each, with significant tightening
- Final Harvest Base Arc
Split into two roughly 15,000 word sections, each around 5 chapters
If this structure holds, there will be five total Max interlude sections spaced throughout the story.
Projected placement:
Interlude 1 was alreasy written and placed starting at Chapter 37
Interlude 2 around Chapter 55
Interlude 3 around Chapter 70 to 75
Interlude 4 around Chapter 85 to 95
Interlude 5 around Chapter 105 to 115
This spacing ensures the story remains primarily focused on Grub.
Narrative Weight Breakdown
Right now:
3 chapters are fully focused on Max’s current quest. 7 chapters total if you include the earlier Max backstory interludes
41 total chapters overall
That means roughly 17 percent of the content involves Max, and the remaining 80+ percent remains centered on Grub.
If the projection holds at around 120 chapters:
~100 chapters will be Grub focused, meaning roughly 300,000 to 350,000 words of Grub content.
The other 20 chapters will be focused on Max, with about 50,000 to 75,000 words of content.
That places Max at roughly one sixth to one eighth of the overall narrative weight.
That feels correct. It means that the story remains Grub’s at its core, and that while Max is important, he is not dominant.
Release Plan for Relaunch
When the rewrite is complete and the story relaunches, the release schedule will look like this:
- Day 1: 10 chapters
- Next 10 days: 3 chapters per day, reaching Chapter 40
- Next 20 days: 1 chapter per day, reaching Chapter 60
- After that: 3 chapters per week consistently
There will be one exception to this expected schedule. During Max focused interludes, chapters will likely be released daily or possibly twice per day. The goal of doing that is to prevent readers who are primarily invested in Grub from waiting up to two weeks to return to his storyline.
This should keep the pacing tight and engagement steady.
Progress continues.
Thirty four percent down.
The climb is still steep, but it no longer feels endless.
Thank you for sticking with me on this journey. It's been fun.
Next update will be Monday March 9th. See yall there.
