26 - The Hunters Lodge

With the string fully enruned and the magic stable, it was time to turn his attention to the other six strings required to finish the instrument he was crafting. With the first one done the rest should be completed without much difficulty. The Fae was actually quite happy with his progress, pausing just long enough for a divination spell to check that everything else was still on schedule.

  —---

With the list of ingredients fresh in hand,

He knew he needed to gather something grand,

So the Hunters schedule needed to be checked,

Before he tried a fight that would get him wrecked,

The Limpet on his arm gladly lead him,

Her personality never getting quiet nor dim,

From the Portals and our Hero was dragged away,

Across the campus on such a fine day,

Into a building made of wood adorned with skulls,

From mighty beasts to the more mundane gulls,

The Hunters Department was clearly here,

As the air itself was filled with death and fear,

Straight to the front desk the pair marched,

To a clerk whose clothes were expertly starched,

After a discussion that made it clear,

That every students life was held dear,

A test was required to judge his skill,

Before they let him join any hunt for a kill,

The testing grounds were there on the right,

The Training Instructor was there for a mock fight,

Only after he reached a level that was expected,

Of the Hunters would his hunt application be accepted,

The Instructor will give you a truthful grade,

Deciding which monsters you can fight and raid,

So into the next room, they both walked,

As the happy mage, continuously talked,

Though even she stopped at the sight,

Of the people there in the middle of a fight,

A furious clash of sword and shield,

As they danced across the dirt packed field,

The Instructor moved as if gliding on ice,

Always just out of reach of the students slice,

Every attack missed by less than an inch,

After which a retaliation made the student flinch,

The narrative has been stolen; if detected on Amazon, report the infringement.

This continued for a little while longer,

Of the two it was clear who was stronger,

The Instructor called the bout to an end,

As he had new arrivals to attend,

With a few words the Instructor beckoned our Hero,

To come forth and prove that his grade wasn’t zero,

Finally the hanger-on released his arm,

As he stepped forward towards possible harm,

Our Hero drew his sword and advanced,

And upon confirmation the two danced,

With every attempt of an attack,

Our Hero received a retaliatory whack,

It was clear he had much more to learn,

To safely gather what was needed for his return,

Though he still had one trick to try,

Springing with the speed a hawk would fly,

Our Hero Kangaroo leaps forward to pierce,

The Instructors defense that has so far been fierce,

While unexpected the Instructor was clearly ready,

As a deflection did not make him unsteady,

With this the test was announced as finished,

Even though our Heroes energy was not diminished,

The Instructor said his basics were bad,

And he rushed in like he was mad,

Yet his instincts were more than okay,

So up to medium beasts he could slay,

Mentioning the beasts he already fought,

And the rewards he most dearly sought,

Just got the Instructor to declare it just luck,

That no beast had his corpse to suck,

Disappointed that he didn’t rank higher,

He spent the rest of the day practicing until he did tire,

Then he retired to the rooms provided,

  Where his current bed resided,

To catch some sleep before the next day,

As it was clear this was an extended stay,

Before the Portal he needed was made,

He would need to improve his grade.

  —---

The Hunters Building was one with style,

Scouting his prey would take quite a while,

So he approached with the intent to join,

No matter the cost in time or coin,

The Clerk was more than happen to assist,

As a new recruit was something they couldn’t resist.
