The Price of Victory

Chapter 11: The Price of Victory

The ruined nation of Varilia stood on the edge of silence.

At its center knelt the colossal demon.

Even on its knees, its height rivaled the tallest towers still left standing. Its body resembled blackened stone, carved by something older than time itself, with crimson veins pulsing faintly beneath its hardened surface.

Behind it, the harvesting machine continued its work.

A monstrous structure that pierced deep into the earth, drilling into the planet’s core without pause.

Each passing second, it stole something that could never be returned.

And walking toward it were three figures.

  Rank 1 Hero.

  Rank 3 Hero.

  Rank 9 Hero.

  Aqualis led them.

His expression was calm, but his eyes carried the weight of everything they had already lost to reach this point.

Behind him, the Rank 3 Hero—the Flame God—rolled his shoulders, flames flickering faintly around his arms.

And behind them both, the Rank 9 Hero followed in silence.

  His breathing was heavy.

  His mana was nearly gone.

  But he did not stop.

They had already defeated the outer demons.

  This was the final obstacle.

  The source.

The one that had summoned the harvesting machine.

  Aqualis stopped.

“This ends now,” he said quietly.

  The Flame God nodded.

  The healer said nothing.

  But he understood.

  Aqualis raised his hand.

  Water gathered at his command.

  The Flame God answered.

  Fire surged forward.

  And when fire met water—

  Mist was born.

The story has been stolen; if detected on Amazon, report the violation.

  Dense.

  Blinding.

It spread across the battlefield, swallowing the demon’s vision whole.

  The colossal demon reacted instantly.

  It roared.

  But its vision was gone.

Aqualis felt the healer’s magic wrap around him like a second skin.

  A strengthening spell.

  A vision spell.

  He could see clearly.

  The demon could not.

  Now.

  Aqualis moved.

  He vanished into the mist.

The demon sensed him too late.

  “Shield Prism.”

Water erupted around the demon’s leg, forming a massive crystalline prison.

  Then it tightened.

  The sound was deafening.

  CRACK.

  The demon’s leg shattered.

Its enormous body collapsed, crashing into the earth hard enough to shake the entire nation.

The Flame God was already moving.

His arm became a blade of fire.

  “Swarm Fire Blade!”

  He leapt.

The flaming blade struck the demon’s neck.

  It cut deep.

  But not enough.

  The blade stopped halfway.

  The demon’s flesh resisted.

The Flame God gritted his teeth.

  He pushed harder.

But his strength alone wasn’t enough.

  “Aqualis!”

He didn’t need to say more.

  Behind them, the healer understood.

  He knew what was needed.

He also knew what it would cost.

  His mana was gone.

  Completely gone.

His body was already at its limit.

  If he cast another spell—

  He might die.

  He looked at Aqualis.

  At his friend.

  His commander.

He remembered their first mission together.

He remembered the promise they made.

  To protect humanity.

  No matter the cost.

  The healer closed his eyes.

  And smiled.

  “Forgive me…”

  He raised his hand.

  His final spell ignited.

  “Divine Amplification.”

  Light exploded from his body.

It surged into the Flame God.

  Into Aqualis.

The Flame God felt his strength double.

  Triple.

  He roared.

  And pushed.

  The blade moved.

  Slowly.

  Then—

  It cut through.

  The demon’s head separated.

  Its body froze.

  Then collapsed.

  Silence.

  The mist slowly faded.

  It was over.

The Flame God landed on the ground, breathing heavily.

  He laughed weakly.

  “We… did it…”

Aqualis allowed himself a small breath.

  Victory.

  They had stopped it.

  He turned.

  “To the healer—we need to—”

  He stopped.

  The healer stood behind them.

  Motionless.

  Still.

  Too still.

  Aqualis walked toward him.

  Slowly.

  “No…”

  He reached him.

Placed a hand on his shoulder.

  The body fell.

  Cold.

  Empty.

The healer’s eyes stared into nothing.

His final spell had taken everything.

  The Flame God’s smile disappeared.

  “…No.”

He fell to his knees beside him.

  “…You idiot…”

  Aqualis said nothing.

  He simply stood there.

  His fists clenched.

  This was the price.

  Victory always had a price.

  But before grief could settle—

  The ground began to shake.

  Aqualis’s head snapped up.

  Behind them—

  The harvesting machine was glowing.

  It had never stopped.

  It had completed its task.

  The entire nation trembled.

  The machine began to rise.

  Ascending into the sky.

  Taking Earth’s energy with it.

  “No.”

  Aqualis moved instantly.

  He launched himself upward.

Water propelled him like a missile.

  He struck the machine.

  “Shield Prism!”

  Water wrapped around it.

  Tried to stop it.

The machine shattered the prison effortlessly.

  It kept rising.

  Higher.

  Faster.

  Aqualis hovered in the air.

  Breathing hard.

  He looked down.

  At the dead healer.

  At the ruined nation.

At the world he had sworn to protect.

  If he let it go—

  Everything his friend died for—

  Would be meaningless.

  His eyes hardened.

  “I won’t let you escape.”

  He made his decision.

  Not as Rank 1 Hero.

  But as a protector.

  He surged forward.

  And grabbed the machine.

  It dragged him upward.

  The Flame God’s eyes widened.

  “AQUALIS!”

  But it was too late.

  The machine accelerated.

  Into the sky.

  Into the heavens.

  And vanished.

  Leaving Earth behind.

  Silence fell over Varilia.

  The Flame God stood alone.

Beside the body of the fallen healer.

  And the empty sky.

Earth had lost its strongest hero.

No one knew if he would return.

No one knew if he was alive.

  And far beyond the sky—

  Beyond Earth—

  Beyond humanity—

  A war had just begun.
