Chapter 14: Eliminating the Meteor Swarm

Just as everyone was preparing in advance for the impending disaster, the timing of this catastrophe arrived much sooner than anyone had anticipated.

On the second day of the resource control measures in Daxia, both official observatories and private enthusiasts discovered the meteor swarm through telescopes.

Under normal circumstances, even if a meteorite struck Planet Blue, it would only impact one region at most.

But this meteor swarm was different. Based on its flight speed and Planet Blue's rotation rate, its impact was likely to be global, causing devastation across most of the planet.

If it were a single meteorite striking Planet Blue, whether it was Daxia, the Great Bear, or Eagle Country, they all possessed the capability to intercept and destroy it.

This time, however, the threat was an entire meteor swarm. Destroying one or two meteors would not stop the subsequent impacts.

Fortunately, observations indicated that only the lead meteors were relatively large, while those trailing behind in the swarm were significantly smaller.

At the Daxia Supreme Conference, a response plan for the meteor swarm attack had already been formulated.

Therefore, immediately upon detecting the swarm, supercomputers were activated to estimate its precise arrival time at Planet Blue.

The calculations estimated an earliest arrival in ten days, and a latest in twelve.

The imperial authorities immediately organized personnel to clear out underground spaces. Thanks to years of war preparedness, which anticipated missile attacks, most cities had constructed extensive networks of air-raid shelters.

While other nations were still embroiled in debate, Daxia needed only three days to clear vast amounts of underground space.

Within two days, survival supplies sufficient for approximately half a month were stockpiled in these underground shelters.

Also within two days, residents in designated zones were notified to proceed in an orderly fashion to their nearest assigned underground shelters.

In a mere seven days, while other countries remained in chaos, the vast majority of Daxia's citizens were already safely secured underground.

Although he had substantial supplies stored at home, Dong Qi did not stubbornly remain there. Instead, following the arrangements of the local street office, he entered the nearby subway station to take shelter from the disaster.

Of course, there were also some individuals who did not heed the official directives to enter the designated shelters, choosing instead to hide in areas they personally deemed safe.

Although the major powers often held divergent views under normal circumstances, facing a disaster of this magnitude that threatened the entire Planet Blue, they ultimately decided to unite.

Based on observations from the space station, several major powers decided to directly destroy the largest meteors within the swarm, which would significantly reduce the overall impact damage.

As for the smaller, fragmented meteors within the swarm, the hope was that they would burn up during atmospheric entry.

Human civilization has developed over many years. Apart from war, a significant portion of that time has been spent in contention with nature.

Although this struggle has seen both victories and defeats, even in failure, humanity has always found ways to barely survive. This is one reason why humanity has not gone extinct.

Confronted with this apocalyptic crisis, each nation also brought out its trump cards.

The Great Bear's chosen target was the largest meteor in the swarm, and their method of destruction remained their traditional "brute-force" approach.

No one had anticipated that beneath the frigid polar ice sheets lay a massive missile silo, housing a super-large missile over one hundred meters tall.

This missile, far larger than any standard rocket, was reportedly originally constructed during the space race with Eagle Country, intended to target Eagle Country's spacecraft in orbit.

This deployment could be considered putting it to its intended use—destroying hostile targets in space.

Compared to the Great Bear's "brute-force" method, Eagle Country this time still opted for a saturation attack strategy.

This method of attack not only has a high fault tolerance rate but can also consume a large inventory of stockpiled weapons from major arms dealers.

With an estimated hundreds of thousands of missiles, it is highly likely that the front half of the meteor swarm can be directly destroyed.

Unlike the Russian Bear and Uncle Sam, who launch attacks from the ground, the Celestial Empire doesn't even bother putting on a show this time. In addition to using ground-based air defense missiles to destroy meteors that may hit its territory...

It also employs attack methods hidden in space. Since the Russian Bear and Uncle Sam primarily target the front of the meteor swarm, the Celestial Empire chooses to strike the meteors in the middle section.

Aside from directly destroying them, it also aims to test whether the meteors in the rear of the swarm will alter their flight paths due to explosions in the middle section.

Just as everyone awaited the arrival of the meteors with anxious hearts, the meteor swarm appeared near Blue Star as anticipated.

Then, as scientists predicted, influenced by Blue Star's gravity, it accelerated and prepared to enter the atmosphere.

As the meteor swarm approached Blue Star's atmosphere, the Russian Bear's massive missiles arrived precisely on time. With tremendous destructive power, they directly obliterated the largest meteor in the swarm.

Faced with an apocalyptic crisis, the special interest groups typically hidden within Uncle Sam's camp did not cause trouble or sabotage this time. Missiles rained down on the meteor swarm like a downpour, and brilliant explosions bloomed one after another like fireworks.

Don’t be fooled by Uncle Sam’s often lackluster performance in normal times—it’s mostly a facade. When a true crisis descends, the Anglo-Saxon powers that usually operate behind the scenes will once again take full control.

This time, Uncle Sam not only flawlessly accomplished the original mission but also exceeded it by destroying the fragments scattered when the Russian Bear obliterated that giant meteor.

Seeing the other two superpowers achieve their destruction targets, the Celestial Empire certainly did not disappoint.

No one expected that the Celestial Empire would abandon traditional projectile weapons in space and, almost imperceptibly, deploy electromagnetic and laser weaponry, which are far more efficient in the vacuum of space.

Although electromagnetic and laser weapons do not produce violent explosive effects upon impact like projectile weapons do...

In terms of both attack frequency and destructive power, they are no less formidable than projectile weapons in space.

At the cost of all its weapons being pushed beyond their operational limits, the Celestial Empire did not target the meteors in the middle section of the swarm. Instead, it precisely and efficiently shattered the larger-sized meteors remaining in the swarm.

When those in the know saw the larger meteors in the swarm being destroyed by the three major powers, they all felt that humanity would easily weather this apocalyptic-level disaster.

After all, the larger meteors capable of causing massive impact damage had been eliminated. Based on past experience, even if the smaller meteors did not disintegrate during descent, they would not inflict significant damage to structures on the ground.

Just as everyone began to relax, however, another crisis quietly emerged.
