Chapter 5: The First Loot Drop

Chapter 5: The First Loot Drop

The streets were a blur as Adrian and Mike sprinted through the wreckage of Mandaue. The ground trembled with the approaching force of the Typhon-Aswang Hive, and every step they took seemed to echo through the shattered city. Mike’s raw power had made him an incredible ally, but Adrian knew that raw power alone wouldn’t be enough to survive this next battle. They needed more—more preparation, more energy, more gear. And the first step toward that was finding loot.

The nearby convenience store had once been a thriving hub of activity, its shelves stocked with essentials and snacks. Now, it was little more than a hollowed-out shell of what it had been. But Adrian had a feeling that the wreckage held something valuable.

As they approached, Adrian raised his hand. The energy around them hummed with potential, and the local Node’s energy bank had been steadily increasing with every battle they fought, every Aberrant they killed. He could feel the system reacting to their every move.

"Mike, we need to check inside," Adrian said, motioning toward the broken glass doors.

Mike looked around at the dilapidated store with some hesitation but nodded. "Got it."

Together, they entered the store, careful of the creaking floorboards beneath their feet. The shelves were upturned, and a haze of dust lingered in the air, but in the center of the room lay a pile of abandoned crates. Adrian walked toward them with purpose. His eyes flicked to the glowing notifications floating in his vision.

  Loot Drop Available

Energy surge detected. Loot drop incoming. Proceed to secure the area.

Adrian crouched next to the crates and pried open the first one. Inside, a shimmering blue light flickered. He reached in, pulling out the first object that would change the tide of their survival.

Unauthorized duplication: this narrative has been taken without consent. Report sightings.

It was a Mana Crystal, larger than any they had harvested before. It glowed with an eerie blue hue, radiating raw cosmic energy. Adrian immediately felt the surge of power that came with it. His hands trembled as he took it into his palm, feeling the energy flood his system. The crystal was worth more than a simple harvest—it was a game-changer.

Mike’s eyes widened. "What is that?"

"A Mana Crystal," Adrian replied, his voice tinged with a hint of awe. "And that’s our ticket to gaining more power. With this, I can upgrade the Genesis Ring, boost our strength, and increase our chances of surviving the Hive."

Mike’s gaze flicked from the crystal to Adrian. "So we’re really doing this? We’re taking on that monster?"

Adrian nodded, the gravity of the situation settling in. "We have to. It’s the only way to move forward. The Hive is a global threat, Mike. If we don’t stop it here, the rest of the world is going to follow Mandaue’s lead. We can’t let it spread."

Mike cracked his knuckles. "I’m in. Let’s make sure that thing never gets another chance to hurt anyone."

Adrian glanced at the notification again. More loot drops were appearing.

Loot Drop - Mana Crystals Collected: 3

Loot Drop - New Ability Unlocked: "Energy Absorption" (Mike Hale)

Mike Hale has unlocked the ability to absorb and store energy from physical impacts to enhance his combat abilities.

"Nice," Adrian muttered, eyeing the ability upgrade that appeared in Mike’s inventory. "You’ve got a new ability. 'Energy Absorption'—you can now store energy from your hits and convert it into temporary buffs. It’ll help you last longer against the Hive."

Mike grinned, testing out a few jabs in the air. "Let’s see how it works in action."

Adrian gave him a small nod, his thoughts already shifting to their next move. They still had a few more loot crates to check. As they moved toward the next pile, Adrian felt a pang of urgency. The Hive was drawing nearer, and their chances of survival were rapidly dwindling.

The second crate was filled with health potions—small vials of shimmering liquid that could heal wounds instantly. Adrian took a couple and tossed them to Mike.

"We might need these," he said. "The Hive won’t be a walk in the park."

Mike nodded, slipping the vials into his pocket. "Understood. Whatever it takes."

Adrian’s mind raced as he continued to loot the area. They needed more gear, more energy, and most importantly, more preparation. As he reached the third crate, a low growl vibrated through the air, and the hairs on the back of his neck stood up. Something had triggered the Hive’s attention. They were running out of time.

Adrian turned to Mike, his face hardening. "We’ve got everything we need for now. It’s time to head out. The Hive’s too close."

Mike’s smile faded, and his jaw clenched. "Let’s finish this."

With one last glance at the loot, Adrian closed the crates and began moving out of the store. They couldn’t afford to waste any more time. The first wave of the Hive’s minions would be upon them soon, and they had no intention of letting the monster breach their defenses.

Together, they raced down the street, adrenaline coursing through their veins as the distant sounds of the Typhon-Aswang Hive’s monstrous roar reached their ears. They were ready.

Adrian’s thoughts flickered back to the mission. They were close, but so were their enemies. This would be their first real test as a team. And if they failed, the city—maybe even the world—would fall.
