  The Universe Chronicles — 001

  “The Slime Squad”

The sound of wooden swords echoed through the training ground, right outside the orphanage.

The instructor walked around in a circle—carefully observing the new students.

“Good… keep your stance… no, don't hold your sword like that! You're gonna hurt yourself.” The instructor said while twirling his mustache.

“Ahh!” a boy shouted and fell to the ground.

“Are you already giving up?” The instructor narrowed his eyes.

The boy shook his head and continued.

The instructor let out a small grin.

  Good… there’s fire in him!

The instructor’s eyes drifted. “Hmm… aren't we missing someone?” He asked the assistant.

“I’m not sure…” The assistant quickly double checked his list, scanning the area.

“Sir, three boys are missing!” The assistant said concerned.

“It’s those boys again… up to no good!” The instructor chuckled while twirling his mustache.

“It's fine—I think I know where they are… go get them.” The instructor ordered the assistant.

The sun stood high while the grass tilted back and forth, by the gentle breeze.

“We’re almost there,” the first boy said with excitement.

“Is this really a good idea? Last time he got really mad!” The second boy’s voice trembled.

The first boy shook his head. “Slime hunt, is better practice than sparring all day!”

The third boy—raised his hand. “Stop!… Look over there!” He pointed towards the tall grass.

  They crouched.

“Can you see them?” The first boy narrowed his eyes.

In the distance something was moving, the grass was slowly bending.

  “There!!” The first boy grinned.

  Yes! We got you!

  The first boy—then bolted.

The two other boys hesitated—then ran after him.

The first boy swung his wooden sword.

“Wind Edge!” a thin layer of air enveloped the sword.

The Klein Green Slime glowed, but before it could react—it was sliced by the air coated sword.

  “Got one!” The boy shouted.

“Watch out!” The other boys warned.

The first boy turned his head to the side.

A volley of slime projectiles flew towards him.

  No—I can’t avoid it!

“Argh!!” The first boy fell hard.

The slime pulsed—then two wooden swords enveloped in fire and water, sliced through it.

“Thanks for saving me guys!” He smiled.

  That's right—I’m not alone!

But little did they know, they had awakened a slime nest.

“Wait—I think we made a huge mistake!” The third boy shouted.

A horde of slimes suddenly surrounded them—trapping them.

They looked at each other—sweat poured down their faces.

“No choice—we need to fight!” The first boy shouted.

One by one they cut down the slimes.

But… There were too many and the boys were quickly running out of Manaflux.

They fought like crazy while taking on multiple hits.

Finally—they stood in a circle with their backs turned to each other, breathing heavily.

“Ahhh, there's no end to them, “the first boy huffed—trying to catch his breath.

“We can’t give up!” The first boy shouted.

  New slimes emerged—closing in…

  The boys slumped, exhausted.

The slimes suddenly glowed brightly—ready to attack.

  The first boy’s eyes widened.

  No—this can’t be the end!

  Suddenly—

“Spark Edge!”—”Drop Stream Edge!” Someone shouted, overlapping each other.

A blur of swords enveloped in fire and water—sliced through the air.

The slimes were burned and shredded. The blades moved in unison—almost like a dance.

  Woo! They're amazing!

Before they knew it, the slimes were vanquished. The boys fell down, looking at their saviors.

“Are you boys alright?” Leo grinned.

  Huh? There's kids out here?

The boys nodded and sat down exhausted.

Ann kneeled down. “Here, take this—drink!” She said under her hood while handing them potions.

  The boys jumped back.

  Ahh—she’s too close!

“What are you doing? Drink it!” Ann insisted.

The boys blushed, then drank the potions. Immediately healing their wounds.

“There you are!” The assistant ran towards them.

He then scolded the boys and humbly thanked Ann and Leo.

Back at the training grounds, the boys bowed deeply—apologizing to the instructor.

“Well! I hope you boys learned something from this!” The instructor's voice stern but with a hint of relief.

The boys looked at each other, their lips curled into a grin.

“Yes! How can we also learn to destroy slimes—like those two?”
