Inaris Blessing

?Dawn threw herself back onto the pillows, her breath coming in shallow, ragged bursts. Her mind was a mess of frustration and lingering cold from the last simulation. She couldn't shake the image of the mother wolf's injured body or the cold, final crushing weight of the bear.

?"I tried to be good. I tried to follow the rules of the Circle of Life, and I still died," she thought bitterly. "I need power that doesn't just defend a territory; I need power that conceals and eliminates the threat before it ever sees me."

?The Frost Fang Wolf mother had taught her discipline and the crucial link between beast instinct and elemental infusion. But the wolf just didn't match her preferred style of hunting. She needed to vanish into the background of her environment.

?She returned to the Cosmo App, the familiar interface a refuge from the chaos of the simulation. Her eyes quickly searched the species column and fixed on the next option: a Yokai Fox. She knew nothing of what a yokai was, but the picture immediately appealed to her: a sleek, dark red fox with velvety black paws and a dramatic black tip on its single tail. Its description mentioned mastery over the Dark Element. This was not the light of defense, nor the clear ice of the hunt. This was the element of silence and shadow.

?Without hesitation, Dawn clicked Confirm and initiated the new situation.

  ?

?Phantom manifested out of the shadows beneath a twisted, ancient redwood in a dense woodland area. She didn't spawn into a shelter; she simply coalesced, the dark energies pulling her form from the ambient shade.

?There were no parents this time, no protective presence. Phantom's mind was clear, her reflexes honed by the intensity of the wolf simulation. The instant she stabilized, the lessons of the Frost Fang Wolf took over. She didn't pause for human thought; she immediately started scanning her surroundings, allowing her new instincts to guide her. She tasted the air for scent and listened for the slightest crackle of static energy, the primal detection of her current form.

?Seeing the area was clear of any immediate threats, the little fox began to condense the shadows within it, just as she had learned to do with the ice. The dark element was warm, a smothering weight that felt instantly familiar. As she infused the shadow into her coat, the color deepened to a rich, glossy midnight hue. With a single, conscious thought driven by the beast's instinct for survival, the fox became almost completely invisible, a ripple of moving air, and utterly silent. Even its small, padded footsteps made no noise on the forest floor.

?Her immediate focus wasn't on fighting, but on survival. The most important thing is a safe place to stay, she thought, already seeking a refuge. But food will come first.

?Phantom stalked around the dense woodland, her body infused with the shadows. The power of near-invisibility was intoxicating. No longer was hunting a risky contest of speed and evasion; it was a foregone conclusion.

?Without much effort, the little fox easily snuck up on an unsuspecting Forest Hawk that was perched on a low-hanging branch. The infusion meant the hawk's sharp vision couldn't register her shape, and its acute hearing detected nothing but the wind. She launched herself upward—a silent, black blur—and the hunt was over before the bird could squawk a warning.

?With her first meal secured, Phantom sought a safe place to shut her eyes. She found a perfect spot: an abandoned burrow, under the base of a massive, ancient oak tree. The heavy root structure provided perfect natural defenses. She ate quickly and efficiently, then curled into a tight ball within the dark safety of the den, letting the shadow element settle into her coat like a protective blanket, and fell asleep for her first night.

?Years flew by for the fox. Hunting was never a challenge; it was a routine. She was a silent ghost, consuming prey and growing rapidly. The relentless, life-or-death pressure of the wolf simulation had forged the connection between her human mind and the creature's instinct.

?As Phantom noticed her fox body getting bigger, she started practicing combining her elemental abilities. She was able to use dark energy projectiles at the exact same time as elemental infusion into her body. This layering of power was now almost passive to her, requiring no conscious thought. The dark arrows formed instantly when danger was sensed, and her body automatically maintained its infusion for stealth. She was evolving, not just growing.

  ?

?One day, Phantom woke up in her den, but instead of seeing her familiar paws, she saw a pair of delicate, human hands resting on the forest floor.

?A wave of intense, irrational panic hit her. I died in my sleep! she thought, frustration and fear merging. She looked down her body and saw her legs ending in human feet. Then she noticed her dark red fox tail, ending in its luxurious black tip, lying behind her. She reached up to her head and felt two pointed, fox ears.

?There was no one to ask what happened to her, no mind-link to explain the shift. She closed her eyes and took a couple of slow, deliberate breaths, trying to calm down and think through the terror. This was an evolution, not a death. She was no longer just a fox; she was something more.

?Standing up was an awkward moment. Since she was naturally a human, using her legs was easy, but the residual memory of running on four paws left her feeling slightly unbalanced, as if her knees were trying to bend the wrong way. She adjusted quickly, but the feeling was strange. This new body felt much lighter and stronger than her other forms.

?Needing a meal to ground herself, the newly evolved fox ran through the forest, seeking her next meal. The shadows answered her call immediately, cloaking her semi-human form. Phantom took a moment as she ran to appreciate her new strength and speed. She jumped from tree branch to tree branch with ease. Silently landing before dashing off again, Phantom wondered how strong she had gotten in this form. Not paying attention to her surroundings, she ran directly into a group of three armed figures. They were heavily armored and carried crudely forged swords and axes—humans from this world, likely local residents or low-rank adventurers hunting in the woods.

?The humans spotted her instantly, mistaking her human-like shape and tail for a common Fox Beast-Folk. The men was unsure or how to act. Before the men could make up their mind, the oldest among them—an aged man with a scarred face—caught the faint, ominous ripple of dark energy clinging to Phantom's form. He froze, his eyes widening in terror.

?He drew his own sword, the steel singing as it cleared the scabbard. "It's not Beast-Folk! It's a young Kitsune! That's dark spirit energy!" he yelled, his voice laced with pure alarm.

?One of the other men, younger and clearly confused, asked, "What is a Kitsune, Elder?"

?The Elder didn't take his eyes off Phantom, who was still adjusting to the sudden confrontation. "It's an evolved fox spirit. They start with one tail and gain more as their power grows. We kill it now, or it grows strong enough to devour our village!"

  ?

?The humans were hostile, deeming it wise to kill the Kitsune now before it gained power. They rushed her, their movements clumsy and loud compared to the silent predators she was used to.

?Phantom had no intention of fighting a fair fight. She focused on the shadows, flooding her body with the element. She made her body nearly transparent, a ghost shimmering in the dark air, making it impossible for the humans to keep their eyes on her. Phantom jumps into the trees.

?While the humans were frantically searching, Phantom, with the instantaneous, layered power she had mastered, set her eyes on her prey. She drew the dark element into a solid form, creating multiple shadow arrows. She launched the projectiles with deadly, practiced precision. Each arrow found its target: the exposed eyes of the three men, dropping them instantly.

?But the dark energy didn't stop there. As the Kitsune's instinct surged, the dark energy of the projectiles began to feed. Phantom felt a bizarre, profound rush—the draining of the targets' life-force into her own core. When the men dropped to the ground, they looked like empty husks of their former self. The Kitsune felt less hungry, less tired, and slightly stronger. Phantom lost herself in her fascination with this new sensation.

  ?

?In the sleek, dark spectator room, Xander leaned forward, watching the final, brutal efficiency of the kills. He saw the dark arrows hit, the instantaneous draining of life, and the complete absence of human hesitation.

?He slammed a victorious fist onto the armrest. "YES! That's it! That's the reaction of a predator! Kill those who dare threaten you! Let go of your humanity and thrive!"

?He had expected her to defend herself. He had expected the Kitsune to use stealth and possibly avoid conflict. But the immediate, non-hesitant use of the Dark Element to consume the targets for vitality—that was the perfect fusion of human efficiency and the creature's dark instinct. She was no longer just surviving; she was thriving as a predator.

?The kitsune stood over the husks of what used to be the three men. Faint whimpers could be heard from a nearby bush. Phantom, acting on instinct, turned around and flared her hand, readying another attack. Before launching the attack, she noticed four little fox tails peeking out.

?Phantom continued to hold back the dark arrows she conjured while speaking. "Come out now. If you're not my enemy, then you have nothing to worry about."

?Four little fox yokai nervously came out from the bush. Phantom asked them, "What are you doing here?"

?The foxes huddled together, afraid of the Kitsune. Phantom continued, "Don't be afraid of me, where are your parents?" Then Phantom realized her mistake and established a mindlink with one of the foxes. "Do not worry, I'm not a threat. Where are your parents?"

?The fox replied with the mindlink. "You must be from another area. It's hard for us to live long in this area. The humans hunt us for our fur. Most of us don't reach the next phase of life."

?Dark energy began to seep off of the Kitsune. The foxes huddled together, afraid that the Kitsune was mad at them. Phantom spoke through gritted teeth. "The humans have been doing what?"

?The foxes still trembling with fear below the Kitsune. Phantom realized she needed to calm down. She took a few deep breaths before using the mindlink to the foxes again. "Do you have somewhere safe to stay?"

?The foxes shook their heads no. The Kitsune waved her hand and instructed them to follow her. Once back at her burrow at the large tree, she asked them, "You can use my burrow for safety. I need to grow my strength some more before I confront the humans."

?The foxes, burning with curiosity, asked, "Was you who Inari sent to save us?"

?Phantom thought back to her wolf mother as she spoke of Fenrir. Inari must be the god to foxes. A new understanding came over Phantom at the thought of the foxes thinking she was sent from their god to save them. "Yes, little ones. I have been sent to rid the world of your troubles and lend you my aid in your time of need."

?As Phantom finished that sentence, she could feel a burning begin deep within her. It didn't hurt her, but felt warm and incredibly powerful. Then she could hear Cosmo's voice inside her head: Inari's blessing achieved. Yokai Fire unlocked.

?Phantom was stunned at this revelation. What exactly is Yokai Fire? Did I lose my Dark manipulation? Phantom gained a burning curiosity and told the foxes, "Stay in my burrow. I'll go get some food for you, rest until I get back."
