Alistair blinked as the glowing words faded from his vision.

Two empty slots hovered at the edge of his peripheral vision, outlined in silver. One pulsed faintly, as if the system was waiting.

He exhaled. “Alright. Let’s see what this does.”

With a thought, he reached toward the first slot. A gentle pressure filled his chest as the Soulbond reacted and Brimma’s name appeared.

  [Group Member Assigned: Brimma Rootgleam]

  Effects Active:

  +3% Damage

  +5% Crowd Control Resistance

  +5% Attribute Bonus

  Soulbound Bonus Applied

  Alistair: +1 to All Stats

A ripple passed through the air as the bond deepened. A faint golden glow pulsed between them for a second, visible only to Alistair, and then vanished.

Brimma squinted at something only she could see. “I got a notification,” she said flatly. “Feels like my back just got heavier.”

“That’s leadership,” Alistair said, stretching like someone who had definitely not almost died twenty minutes ago. “I’m your glorious commander now. Bow before me.”

“I’ll bow when your ribs stop looking like toothpicks,” Brimma muttered, but she wasn’t hiding the smirk.

  “Notification?” Kael asked casually.

She gave him a sharp look. “Aye. Something about being assigned to his harem.”

He rolled his eyes. “It’s not a harem. It’s a battlefield coordination system.”

  “Sure it is, precious.”

Alistair ignored her and opened the second slot. Kael’s name didn’t appear automatically. “Kael, you need to accept the assignment.”

Kael looked puzzled. “I didn’t get anything.”

Alistair snapped his fingers. “Spirit guide. You don’t have one. No system access.”

Kael frowned. “Is it really that bad?”

“It’s like walking through a dungeon with earmuffs on,” Alistair said. “You’re still competent. Just… noisily uninformed.”

“Oh, for...” Kael muttered, then his eyes unfocused. “Checking stats manually.”

  A moment passed.

Kael blinked. “Did my Agility just jump by five?”

Alistair grinned. “You’re welcome. That would be me. Turns out having a vampire overlord comes with perks.”

Kael looked down at his hands, then at Brimma. “We’re buffed?”

“Feels like it,” she admitted, cracking her knuckles. “But if you start barking orders, I’m out.”

Alistair placed a hand to his chest. “Madam, I guide, I inspire, I do not bark.”

Kael gave him a long, tired look. “How many of these perks involve nearly dying?”

“Most,” Brimma and Alistair said in unison.

  A moment of quiet passed.

Then Kael exhaled, muttering under his breath. “If I die with all this extra Constitution, I’m blaming both of you.”

Two names glowed in his vision now. His people. His companions. His team.

And for once… he didn’t feel like the underdog.

  Not completely.

  The battlefield shifted.

Brimma darted behind a boulder, still in gnome form, panting like she’d sprinted across the continent. Kael vaulted up a slope to claim the high ground, arrows already notched. And Alistair stood at the center, eyes tracking each enemy champion like a noble surveying a ballroom filled with people he intended to either seduce or kill.

“Right,” he muttered, scanning the carnage. “Let’s not die.”

The remaining five enemy champions weren’t loafers. No fodder left, just killers. A hulking ogre still pulsing with crystal energy. The Blight Mage, now veiled in swirling rot-mist. The juggernaut human warrior, a berserker half orc and the unnamed spell-slinger. They all moved like veterans of a dozen arenas.

[Leadership Domain – Group Bonus Applied]

He saw it now, glowing outlines of Brimma and Kael. Tiny health flickers, slight stamina bars hovering faintly near their edges.

“Hey, Kael,” he said aloud, feeling the bond between them pulse. “Shoot something pretty. I’ll cover your bad angles.”

“You’re all my bad angles,” Kael muttered from above.

  [Assigned Companion: Kaelren]

  [Group Bonus Applied]

Stats surged again. Alistair didn’t have time to admire the numbers but Kael’s next arrow flew straighter, harder, and struck with almost poetic vengeance.

  [Critical Hit!]

  [Enemy Champion – Half-Orc Berserker – HP: 287 → 211]

The berserker screamed and charged, straight at Alistair.

“Brimma!” he called out. “Time to do your thing!”

“Oh, I’m sorry,” she shouted back, voice gravelly and annoyed. “Am I the buff dispenser now? Would you like fries with that too?”

Still, her staff glowed. Bark-like energy crawled up his arms.

  [Buff Applied: Stonehide Bark]

  +20% Physical Defense

  Duration: 15 seconds

  He didn’t waste it.

The berserker’s cleavers came down like guillotines. Alistair ducked, rolled, and came up with his Redcrystal Sword slicing across her thigh.

  [Damage Dealt: 42]

  [Status Applied - Bleed]

She snarled and swung, catching his side.

  [HP: 138 / 180]

“Ow. You could’ve at least taken me to dinner first,” he grunted.

Behind him, Kael’s arrows were a constant percussion. And Brimma?

Brimma was channeling something ugly. She darted from cover, flinging [Veil of Dread] directly at the spell-slinger.

[Dark Magic – Veil of Dread Activated]

Effect: Disorients and lowers defense of targets in radius

“Surprise, sweetling,” she muttered as the spell hit.

  The caster stumbled. Alistair pounced.

  [Backstab – Bonus Applied]

  [Damage Dealt: 61]

  The caster fell.

  [Enemy Champion Eliminated]

  XP Gained: +2,980

Alistair didn’t even have time to celebrate. The berserker had recovered, and the ogre was approaching from the left, each stomp rattling the air.

Kael called out from the ridge. “We’ve got movement on the mage!”

Sure enough, the Blight Mage was weaving another massive spell, something wide, vile, pulsing with violet haze.

Alistair cursed. “Brimma! That’s your date. Show her a bad time.”

The gnome growled and leapt toward the blight mage’s position, muttering about ‘goddamn bloodsuckers thinking they’re generals now.’

The berserker reached Alistair again. She was bleeding, snarling, feral.

He blocked one cleaver with his dagger, redirected the other with his sword, and kicked her square in the gut.

  She flew back two meters.

  “Okay. That felt good.”

Kael finished it with an arrow through her eye socket.

  [Enemy Champion Eliminated]

  XP Gained: +3,723

  Two down. Three to go.

  And then boom.

The ogre landed behind him like a meteor. The earth split. Debris rained.

Alistair was flung forward, rolling, coughing blood.

  [HP: 93 / 180]

  Status: [Dazed – 2 seconds]

He blinked through the fog. Looked up.

The ogre stood framed in the chaos. Towering. Glowing. Cracking its massive knuckles like it had just woken up from a good nap and was ready to ruin someone’s life.

  Alistair swallowed.

“Round two, or was it three? At this point I have lost count.”

The battlefield was chaos but now it was their chaos.

Alistair ducked under a glaive, narrowly missing the ogre’s swipe. The crystal-jagged brute let out a guttural roar, shaking the trees with each thunderous step. Its glaive smashed into the ground beside him, sending dirt and shattered bone flying.

  [HP: 87 / 170]

[Status: Concussed – Minor coordination debuff, duration: 3 seconds]

“Well,” Alistair muttered, blinking stars from his eyes. “That felt personal.”

The human juggernaut was next, an armored monolith of raw muscle and steel. His helmet gleamed with blood, and every movement was deliberate, controlled. His health bar, still near the top, mocked them.

Kael was doing his best, positioned on a jagged ridge to the left, raining down arrows. Each shot chipped away at the warrior’s health, but the bar barely moved.

  [Kael’s Attack]

[Damage Dealt: 12] – Bleed applied

  [Human Champion HP: 577 / 630]

“Kael,” Alistair shouted, dodging another blow from the ogre, “Please tell me you brought more arrows this time!”

A grunt from above. “You gave me the quiver. It’s your fault if they suck!”

Brimma, on the far edge of the battlefield, traded spells with the Blight Mage. Earth magic slammed into fields of poison and rot, the air thick with opposing forces. The gnome, back in her regular form, hurled a bolt of green energy, only for it to dissolve in mid-air as necrotic fumes coiled around it.

“You call that a spell?” Brimma bellowed. “I’ve seen badgers with more bite!”

The Blight Mage hissed. “I’ll wrap your bones in fungus and let the forest feed.”

“Oh, please. I’ve passed worse gas in my sleep!”

Alistair barked a laugh, then yelped as the ogre slammed his glaive again. He rolled, bringing up his Redcrystal Sword, and slashed the creature’s thigh.

  [Damage Dealt: 41]

[Status: Crystal Feedback – 10% damage reflected]

  [Alistair HP: 81 / 170]

He gritted his teeth. “Right. No more cuddling with the ogre.”

The human juggernaut lunged forward and Alistair barely parried, both weapons crossing to catch the blow.

[Parry Successful – Stamina Cost: 12]

  [SP: 53 / 122]

“Brimma!” Alistair shouted. “A little help here would be amazing!”

“I’m a bit busy keeping my insides inside!” she shrieked back.

And yet without missing a beat, a spiked flower erupted nearby, Spire Bloom.

  [Spire Bloom – Active]

Effect: +3 stamina regen/sec within radius

Bonus: Minor resistance to ranged damage

“Bless your ugly little soul,” he breathed, stepping into the radius. His lungs burned. Stamina ticked up. Not much. Enough.

Then, he felt it. That inner coil of heat, of pressure. His blood boiled.

Alistair raised a hand and whispered, “Burn.”

  [Searing Vein – Activated]

  Target: Crystal-Touched Ogre

[Damage Dealt: 88 – Scaling based on missing HP]

  [Status Applied - Burning: 4% HP/sec for 5 seconds]

The ogre roared, reeling back as the veins in its body ignited with internal fire. Alistair didn’t stop to celebrate.

He turned, eyes locking on the juggernaut.

  “KNEEL,” he growled.

  [Ability Activated – Noble Edict]

  Target: Human Champion

Effect: [Compelled] – Forced to kneel

  Duration: 2 seconds

The armored warrior staggered, knees slamming into the dirt.

Kael’s eyes lit up. He drew a black-fletched arrow and let it fly.

  [Kael’s Critical Hit!]

  [Damage Dealt: 82]

  [Human HP: 490 / 630]

  [Status: Bleeding – Severe]

  “Nice shot!” Alistair called.

“I’m a miracle!” Kael shouted back, ducking behind cover.

The ogre surged again but Alistair was ready. He slammed his hand into the dirt.

  [Spell Activated – Stonecoil Grasp]

  Target: Crystal-Touched Ogre

  Effect: Immobilized for 3 seconds

Stone tendrils erupted from the earth, clamping onto the ogre’s legs. It howled, struggling against the snaring roots.

Alistair sprinted toward the human champion.

  “Brimma! Now!”

Without hesitation, the gnome raised her staff and unleashed her new spell.

  [Veil of Dread – Activated]

  Target: Human Champion

[Status: Disoriented, -10% Defense, -5% Attack Speed]

  Alistair didn’t hesitate.

He plunged his Redcrystal Sword into the warrior’s chest.

  [Critical Hit! Backstab Bonus]

  [Damage Dealt: 96]

  [Human Champion HP: 394 / 630]

  [Bloodthirst: +12 (Total: 46 / 500)]

The warrior growled. Tried to rise. The compulsion faded. He roared and threw a blind haymaker.

  [Ethereal Phase – Activated]

  Alistair vanished.

The juggernaut struck air. Behind him, Kael stood on a ledge, arrow nocked. One of the good ones.

[Arrow: Gravebark] – Special Effect: Bonus vs. Undead/ Summoned Creatures

  [Headshot – Confirmed]

  Damage: 200

Effect: Defense Penalty (30%), Rot DoT

  [Juggernaut HP: 394 → 194]

  Another heartbeat.

[Secondary Effect: Forest Rot – Triggered]

  Damage Over Time Applied

The arrow burned with spectral petals as it struck. The juggernaut groaned, knees buckling.

Kael didn’t wait. He fired again, two more regular arrows in rapid succession.

  [Damage Dealt: 38]

  [Damage Dealt: 36]

  [HP: 194 → 120]

  Alistair landed beside him, panting.

“Did you kill him?” he asked hopefully.

Kael released one last shot. The arrow flew and sank into the Juggernaut’s throat.

  The warrior staggered forward...and fell.

[Enemy Champion Defeated: Roderik Goldhelm – Level 22 – Human Juggernaut]

  XP Gained: +7,450

  [Redcrystal Sword – Bloodthirst Stacks: 49 /500]

  [HP: 81 / 180]

Alistair blinked. “Okay… okay. That’s two.”

Only the ogre, the Blight Mage, and the berserker remained.

The berserker was already half-broken, blood pouring from a dozen wounds.

  Alistair’s eyes locked on hers.

  His palm tingled.

  [Sanguine Grasp – Activated]

  Cost: 20 Mana + Blood

  Target: Half-Orc Berserker – Level 19

  HP: 48 / 210

His fingers flexed, and he reached. Not with his arms, but with something deeper. Darker.

  The blood inside her twitched.

“Come here, you loud-mouthed artichoke,” Alistair snarled.

She froze mid-scream, limbs locking in place, a stunned marionette pulled by invisible strings. Her cleavers clattered to the ground as her body was dragged three meters forward, straight into Alistair’s waiting blades.

He plunged the Redcrystal Sword through her ribs. The Dagger of Illumination slid into her side.

  [Critical Hit!]

  [Damage Dealt: 92]

Status Applied: [Stunned] – 2s, [Light Burn], [Bleed]

[Enemy Champion Defeated: Half-Orc Berserker – Level 19]

  XP Gained: +6,740

HP Restored: +15 (Sanguine Grasp – Bonus Heal)

  [HP: 63 / 180]

  [MP: 37 / 122]

He exhaled. “Thanks for the snack.”

  Then the battlefield shifted.

The Blight Mage snarled in rage and raised her staff to cast...

  And Brimma exploded into motion.

Not in gnome form. Not as a spider.

  A badger.

The furious furball launched herself into the Blight Mage’s chest, tiny jaws clamping down around the woman’s throat with feral precision.

A horrid gurgle. A thrash of limbs. Then silence.

[Enemy Champion Eliminated: Blight Mage – Level 20]

Alistair winced. “Remind me to never piss off grandma.”

The ogre was all that remained.

It towered over them, its massive glaive crackling with residual energy, crystalline skin refracting light into jagged rainbows.

Kael loosed an arrow, normal this time, but his Fangbasket quiver pulsed.

  [Arrow Inflicted: Forest Rot]

Effect: Minor bleed + stacking rot damage over time

  The ogre barely flinched.

Brimma reverted back to her gnome form, panting and pale. Her staff danced, summoning a swirling earthen structure.

  [Spell Cast: Thornbloom Totem]

A spiked totem burst from the ground, launching bursts of thorny projectiles at the ogre’s torso and legs.

Brimma followed up with a blast of green light from her staff.

[Basic Attack: Staff – Earth Infusion]

  Damage: 17

Status: [Irritated] – Movement penalty applied

“Chipping away at a mountain with spoons,” Alistair muttered. “Wonderful.”

The ogre roared and began advancing.

“Kael, Darken Sight incoming. Use the ring!”

Alistair raised his hand. Mana surged.

  [Spell Cast: Darken Sight]

  Area: 3 meters

  Duration: 10 seconds

  Effect: Blindness to enemies, Disorientation

Black tendrils enveloped the enemy champion. The ogre stumbled, momentarily disoriented.

  “Now!” Alistair called.

Kael nodded, reaching down to the silver band on his finger.

[Item Activated: Ring of Airborne Might]

Effect: Summons a piercing wind arrow with shockwave on impact

The arrow shimmered with unstable wind energy, released with a low twang.

It struck the ogre square in the chest.

  [Impact!]

  [Damage Dealt: 63]

[Status: Unbalanced] – Crystal skin cracked

  Shockwave Applied: Nearby debris displaced

  Movement Impaired: -30%

  Alistair’s leadership skill pulsed.

  [Tactical Flow – Activated]

  Target: Kaelren

  ? Next skill effectiveness +50%

  ? No resource cost

  ? Cooldown halved

Kael blinked as the arrow left his bow, his body reacting faster than thought.

The impact shattered the already-fissured crystal carapace.

  [Crystal Shatter Triggered]

Weak Point Exposed – Chest Cavity

  “Light it up!” Alistair roared.

Brimma followed with a green burst from her staff.

  Kael fired again.

Alistair dashed in and drove the Redcrystal Sword deep into the exposed core.

[Damage Dealt: 118 – Critical Hit]

[Enemy Champion Eliminated: Crystal-Touched Ogre – Level 23]

  XP Gained: +9,630

The giant toppled like a cracked statue, breaking apart into jagged shards.

  Silence.

Alistair staggered backward, coated in blood, ichor, and pulverized crystal dust.

“Okay,” he gasped. “Now that... was a fight.”
