"Run!"
Robinson let out a low growl. If there were only a dozen or so mindless ghouls, he and Pyre could handle them, but with an 'Overlord' directing these undead creatures, their combat effectiveness would increase exponentially.
Tony sorrowfully discovered that everyone didn't even have a choice of direction to escape, and there were monsters in sight everywhere.
From high above, as the ghouls ran, a large semicircular formation clearly presented itself. If there weren't too few of them, the seven unlucky ones would have been surrounded directly.
"Come on, they're within a hundred meters!" Pire's reminder made Will's face pale, and he didn't dare to look back, using all his might to sprint wildly.
The silence of the cemetery was broken!
The crows, who were pecking at the maggots in the foul-smelling mud with their claws, were startled and flapped their wings, flying up into the sky.
With a thud, a ghoul rushed too fast and its right Achilles tendon snapped, causing it to fall to the ground with its head buried in the mud. However, it quickly got up again, despite its right foot twisting irregularly, but it didn't feel any pain at all, and continued to chase after its target.
Humans and sub-humans, after death, if their souls are not comforted, have a certain probability of becoming ghouls that feed on corpses. However, at this time they have long since lost their former appearance, become extremely ugly, with rotting flesh, leaving only the instinct to eat.
As time passes, some qualified ghouls will grow a soul seal in their skull, the seal can absorb magical energy from space, constantly transforming their body, making them stronger.
A shattered soul will also gradually repair itself in this process, and preliminarily open up wisdom. Reaching this step, the Ghoul is considered to have formally become a mid-tier undead creature, equivalent to completing the human process from birth to adulthood.
The giant ghoul behind him actually knew how to set up an ambush, at least it was a high-ranking one.
High-ranking ghouls have the ability to think independently and have fierce combat power, roughly equivalent to that of a fifth-tier war mage.
Among the seven people, Robinson was a fifth-level soul mage with the strongest strength, but in the end, he still ended up being killed instantly.
In less than one minute, seven people had already opened up a distance between them.
The four magic users charged forward, with Tangdon relying on his physical strength honed from years of delivering messages on foot to rank third from the back, Will trailed behind by ten meters, and as for Gill, he had already fallen far behind.
"Don't leave me behind!" Kiel wailed.
Robinson seemed not to have heard, his head didn't even turn back, let alone Pire and Tony, who wouldn't care about him either.
"Uncle Keir has fallen behind!" Tong Dun reminded, already having a bad premonition.
"Never mind him, he's a goner!" Robinson brought Keel along just to use him as cannon fodder for this kind of emergency.
Danton pursed his lips tightly, reason telling him that Robinson's judgment was correct. Keel had already entered middle age, over 40 years old, and his physical strength had declined severely, making it impossible for him to support this long-distance sprint. Saving him would only drag down everyone's speed, turning them all into the zombies' lunch together.
"Help...ah!" Kiel's cry for help was abruptly cut off and turned into a shrill scream.
Danton turned around and saw a ghoul pounce on him, its rotten teeth biting deeply into his neck. Then it shook its head violently, tearing off a large piece of flesh along with the clothes.
Three of the fastest Ghouls arrived, pounced on Kiru, and drowned him like a hunting dog catching its prey, ferociously tearing and biting, with blood and flesh flying everywhere.
"Robinson, think of something! This is flat terrain, if we keep running like this, we'll be caught up sooner or later!" Pire yelled, throwing away everything on him that he didn't need for the time being to lighten his load.
"Run towards 11 o'clock direction, there should be a small town over there, we can hide for a while!"
Robinson was not incompetent, and since he knew the task was risky, he naturally made detailed preparations. He bought a rough map from those adventurers who had been to the Raven Ridge Cemetery.
This decision will bring everyone closer to the left side of the Ghoul, but there's no choice, seeing Robinson change direction, everyone followed suit.
"How far?" Downton had been about to drop his backpack, but stopped at these words.
"Over two thousand meters!" Robinson pulled out the map, took a glance, and at this moment, he could only pray that the guy who sold him the map hadn't marked the wrong location.
"No problem, it's not far, I can hold on!" Tang Don knew his physical ability, if he could run there, then he had to make plans for the next action.
"Don't drop the backpack, it's a waste of energy." Duren was anxious, even Robinson had dropped his backpack, but Tongton still carried it on his back, and he didn't forget that his friend had brought the most things.
"Shut up, it'll worsen the heart and lung burden!" Tang Dun adjusted his breathing, turned back, saw that the Ghoul had distanced itself by a segment due to gnawing on Gill, and immediately slowed down his pace to conserve energy.
"Haha, that kid is going to fall behind." Tony said with a hint of schadenfreude.
The ghouls devour Kei, consuming him in less than a minute, and then resume their pursuit. This group of monsters, driven solely by the instinct to eat, are completely unaware of fatigue.
The distance was narrowing bit by bit, less than a hundred meters now. Tandon turned his head and even saw some maggots crawling on them, dragging out pieces of nauseating green mucus.
"Why are you still chasing?" Willie's eyes were like a dead dog, and the oppressive feeling that he could die at any moment made him almost collapse.
No one explains, everyone is saving their breath.
Pire's curse, after becoming an undead creature, has a natural aversion and extreme hostility towards all living beings, yearning to tear apart and devour their flesh and blood, so they will relentlessly pursue them.
"I hope there aren't too many flesh-eating ghouls in this town!" Robinson prayed silently, knowing that their only chance of survival lay in getting out of their sight.
"Why hasn't this guy dropped out yet?" Tony wondered in amazement, as Tongtong was like a piece of chewing gum stuck at the end of the team, and the zombies just couldn't catch up.
"Awesome!" Robinson took a glance and found the key to the problem. Tongton had always kept a safe distance from the ghouls, and whenever they chased him, he would accelerate immediately. After safety was ensured, he would slow down his pace, adjust his breathing, rest, and accumulate physical strength for the next sprint.
"I haven't even got a young man to calm down!" Pire sighed, at least mentally, he had lost to him, and he believed that once the corpse spirit caught up, it would be Will who died.
"There it is, the town!"
Durant's loud shout sent everyone into a frenzy of joy, and after running for more than three minutes, the small town finally appeared in sight.
"We're saved!" Will's extreme joy turned to sorrow, and after the long run, he failed to control his physical consumption. When jumping over a pit, his calf suddenly softened, and he didn't exert enough strength, heavily falling into it, just hitting a sharp stone.
"Come on!" Tandon caught up with him and grabbed Will's arm, pulling hard.
"My leg!" Will ran a dozen steps before letting out a pained yelp and dropping to his knees.
"Come on, put in some effort!" The ghoul had already chased them to seventy meters away, and they would soon encounter each other. Tang Dong dragged Will for several meters, looked down, and was completely stunned.
Will's left calf bone was fractured, bent at a sixty-degree angle, and only held together by skin and flesh. Blood flowed from the wound cut by the stone, soaking his pants.
"What's wrong with my leg?" Will's face turned pale and his body convulsed, he didn't even have the strength to lower his head to take a look.
"It's nothing, just a twisted ankle!" Tang Don comforted Will, glancing at the increasingly distant Robinson and his party, then turning back to look at the approaching ghouls, suddenly raising his arm to wipe away the sweat on his face.
"It's broken, my leg is broken!" Will still saw the fractured left leg, and he cried out in pain, knowing he was a goner. He then caught sight of Downton, like a lifeline, and grabbed onto him, "Don't leave me behind, please don't leave me behind!"
"I won't leave you behind." Danton shifted his backpack to the front, crouched down and grabbed Will's arm, preparing to hoist him up.
Will collapsed onto Danton's back, overcome with emotion, tears gushing out like a fountain, uncontrollably pouring outwards. He knew he shouldn't be doing this, or else both of them would die, but he still held onto a glimmer of hope, unwilling to give up that tiny chance of survival.
"Look at Tandon, that kid's gone crazy!" Pire exclaimed in shock as he turned around to see Will's frantic cry.
"Has this kid gone crazy? Behind Will, both of them will die!" Tony almost dropped his jaw.
"Run fast!" Robinson's intention was to use them as cannon fodder. Although Downton's behavior was unexpected, he wouldn't be moved by it.
"Dundon, drop him or you'll die too!" Duren's eyes were red with urgency. "Will, you coward, for the sake of your life, are you going to betray a good friend of three years?"
"No, no!" Will wailed, his arms around Downton's neck relaxing involuntarily.
"Danton, be rational!" Duran wanted to run back, but his legs didn't listen to him at all. He knew he was afraid and didn't dare to save them.
Will felt ashamed and thought of Tangdon's care for himself over the years, suddenly using force to push him down from his back.
The ghoul chased after him, making a fierce pounce, bringing with it a large amount of foul odor that pressed down on him.
"Downton, go!" Will exerted himself and jumped up, his hands high in the air, embracing the ghoul's right leg and pulling it down.
Downton stumbled back a few steps, and when he turned around, he saw Will and the ghouls tangled together. Several more came pouncing down on him, pinning him to the ground, and one even leapt over them, charging towards Downton himself.
"Run fast!" Tony yelled.
Danton didn't listen to him, drew out his dagger and stared at the incoming ghoul with a cold face. At this time, if he ran away, adding the delay of turning around, his back would be left to the ghoul, enough for it to kill him three times. It's better to fight to the death.
The approaching ghoul squeezed out a hoarse roar from its damaged vocal cords, like the death knell!
Danton held his breath, eyes wide open, staring at it. As the sharp claws swung in, he used all his strength to swing his left arm out and knock its arm away, then gripped the dagger tightly with his right hand and stabbed it fiercely towards its head.
Pffft, the dagger stabbed into the ghoul's eye socket, and then Tang Don exerted force to stir it, thoroughly killing it.
However, due to the momentum of the charge, the corpse still came crashing over, its nearly hundred kilograms of weight causing Tang Don to involuntarily retreat several steps, and even some crawling maggots were flung onto his body.
"Awesome!" Pire looked stunned, he didn't expect this kid to perform so amazingly, actually achieving a one-hit kill. He was worried earlier that if Tongdon listened to Tony's words, he would be dead for sure.
