Chapter 23: Continued Exploration

The way to the third floor went by smoothly.

[ 7/10 sapients killed ]In The Core's opinion, at least. The invaders themselves seemed uneasy about their comrades death's.

The Core could understand if they were embarrassed Which The Core could confirm that happened, for the Blueprint for every human included the damages.

If every human death led to a new design it could speed up its research as there would be many more samples, but it had a feeling at some point searching through the system for monsters to summon would become tiresome.

Should it do an all-human floor at some point? But that would be much later, not because it wouldn't unlock more floors as that would definitely happen during this raid based on the number of interlopers and their competence but because The Core itself still hasn't been able to figure out how to keep one alive.

This piece of information made The Core feel giddy, it was finally gonna unlock more floors!

[ 8/10 sapients killed ]The Core snapped out of fantasising about its future dungeon development and focused on the humans currently inside its dungeon.

One of them died on the third floor, The Core was sure it was one who inhaled more of the Kiselina Spores, although not due to lung damage but rather from walking into one the holes it dug, falling and having its neck bitten by four Vampiric Fishes simultaneously.

Its soul appeared but The Core dismissed it like it did with the ones before. At first it didn't absorb them because it was too excited to think straight but now it didn't do so as while immersed in memories it would be unable to supervise what was going on inside its dungeon.

Other than that invader nobody else died on this floor although the exploration of it took much longer than the previous two.

It seemed as if they were expecting something to strike from the waters, paranoidly avoiding every fish and checking for any depressions, the intensity increased after what happened to that one human.

The only fish that weren't being avoided were the ones covered with illusion magic by Hypno Lotuses and Mirage Lilies respectively, leading to more paranoia as the humans couldn't figure out what was biting them.

If The Core was more aware of the human psyche it would realise it conditioned them to be aware that ground wasn't an absolute barrier and combined with the fact the previous floors had at minimum two different mobile monsters resulted in certain expectations that weighed on the mind.

Unfortunately The Dungeon Master wasn't aware of such things so in its eyes the Invaders were being excessively cautious, leading to a slower exploration, which it was always going to be upset about.

Unauthorized duplication: this tale has been taken without consent. Report sightings.

There was also an Invader who threw a mundane fish into the surrounding foliage and only then started collecting it, this action was copied by a few other humans.

When they filled the bags they had on themselves did they leave.

This led to a significant decrease in magical deception for the rest of the raid.

The Core wasn't thrilled by this prospect but it knew if it wanted to be recommended to others it simply had to let a few leave with spoils.

The ones left behind in the dungeon, when they finally discovered the exit leading to the 4th floor, took their time to discuss whether jumping in the hole that had stairs inside it was a good idea.

After a while of conversation they sent in one of them to check and only after it reported the staircase safe did they enter it.

Curiously some of them walked using the stairs, just like the swordsman while others swam, just like The Only One.

The Core didn't see any correlation between the samples.

Maybe that was simply a personal preference and therefore didn't have any external indicators?

That was fine since this didn't impact The Core in any way, it just wanted to know.

When they arrived at the fourth floor, The Core finally decided to do a head count to see how many it had to kill.

7 was the number of invaders currently inside its dungeon.

The number would have been larger if a non-insignificant portion of them didn't run out after being reckless and inhaling Kaselina spores and if the ones who just left after gathering the plant life on its third floor returned.

The Core watched as the invaders looked around the floor, not moving from the wall of water they emerged from but instead cautiously examining their surroundings while using energy to dry themselves off with but a flick of wrist.

Interestingly each of them made the same motion, or at least a very similar one, could this be related to some sort of qi-powered spell?

The Core decided to find out when it finally managed to make humans work or if it ever found out how to sense qi and focused back on the matter at hand.

The Nature Deer wasn't nearby and although the Invaders would inevitably meet it as they explored the floor, The Core decided that it was gonna abuse its power and notify the most dangerous 4th floor monster about their exact location.

When one of the Invaders mustered up its courage and went deeper into the forest he got immediately ambushed by False Fruits.

The others tried to rescue him and succeeded but only because they could safely retreat to the exit which didn't have any trees surrounding it.

The Core didn't intend to fix that as it was intentionally left this way. At first it was indeed a designing mistake but then it realised having a false safe spot could be beneficial to it.

If you think the greatest danger are the immobile trees or barely moving fruits then you won't expect anything else.

Although these ones didn't even expect the Vampiric Squirrels which made their way over to the Invaders, intending to suck them dry of their blood.

One of them jumped up when a Vampiric Squirrel ran under his clothes and started to bite into his thigh.

It tried to throw it out but the Squirrel only temporarily let go in order to run further in, eventually biting somewhere in its crotch area, causing a very loud scream and also the monsters death as the human punched it with all its strength, though the invader did topple to the ground immediately after.

Unfortunately no other monster could capitalise on this mistake but neither could its companions help as they were also dealing with their own squirrel problem.

Only when every squirrel died did they breathe a sigh of relief. Regrettably none of them died, only the two who struggled the most seemed a bit pale, as they lost more blood than the others.

When they finally gathered themselves they did something completely outrageous, they began discussing leaving!

The one who had its crotch area bitten seemed to advocate for this option the loudest while the others were hesitating as to not anger Elder Wang, which seemed to be the name of The Crazy One.

Thankfully the Nature Deer was already there by this point. Otherwise a truly unfortunate experience would happen where The Core's advancement would be stifled.
