Chapter 9: The Great Monk Falls Ill

The next day, before dawn, Yang called Wang Ping'an early and took him to the Treasure Tower Temple. If it were something else, Yang would not have woken up his son so early, but making offerings to Buddha requires sincerity, especially for such an important matter as fulfilling a vow, which must be done with utmost respect and reverence; sleeping in before fulfilling a vow is not allowed.

Wang Ping'an asked Yang, why not have breakfast first and then go, going on an empty stomach seems unnecessary. After listening to this, Yang smiled and told Wang Ping'an that their Wang family was a big donor, if they went to make a vow, the abbot of the temple would let someone specially prepare vegetarian food for them, so it didn't matter if breakfast was eaten a bit late.

Yang took Wang Ping'an and little girl Ding Danru together to Bao Ta Si.

Xuzhou Bao Ta Temple is located on the northwest edge of Xuzhou City, in a dense forest. It was built not long ago, only a few decades ago. According to legend, during the Sui Dynasty, war ravaged the land, and a high-ranking monk from Linggan Temple in Chang'an came to Xuzhou. Seeing the suffering of the people and the desolation everywhere, he made a great vow to lead the people in clearing the battlefield, burying the dead, and building a hut on the edge of the forest to provide solace for the spirits of the deceased. After peace was restored, the people, grateful for the monk's kindness, built a temple on the site where he had lived, and erected a pagoda within it to commemorate him. By now, the abbot of the temple has already passed down through three generations.

Wulicun Village is not far from Baota Temple, and after a slow ride of half an hour, they arrived. The sky had just dawned, and the temple gate was already open. Yesterday, Yang had sent someone to inform the temple, so the guest monk was waiting at the door early in the morning, waiting for the big incense guests to arrive.

At the temple gate, Wang Ping'an got off the carriage and saw three red-lacquered mountain gates in front of him, with brass door knockers, red walls and yellow tiles. It was indeed a very large temple. He helped Yang down from the carriage, and the guest monk hurried up to greet them, clasping his palms together and loudly chanting "Amitabha", welcoming Yang's arrival.

Wang Ping'an and Yang entered the Treasure Tower Temple, lit incense and worshipped Buddha. Yang was reciting words of gratitude to thank the ancestors for their blessings. Wang Ping'an accompanied his mother to kneel on one side, looking around the magnificent Treasure Hall. He saw that all the Buddha statues in the hall were covered in gold, shining brightly, and thought to himself: "This temple is really wealthy! Not to mention other things, just covering such large Buddha statues with gold must have used at least a hundred or two kilograms of gold!"

Yang recited Buddha's name for a long time before getting up. The monk invited her to the pool of still thoughts, in front of a large bronze cauldron, and asked Yang to donate incense oil money. Yang took off a string of bright pearls from her wrist and threw them into the cauldron.

The monk was overjoyed, this string of bright pearls is as big as a thumb, and the value is probably over 100 yuan. This is a lot of sesame oil money! The monk bowed deeply and said: "Amitabha, thank you Yang donor, you came early, I don't know if you have had breakfast, if you don't mind, please come to the back hall, and I will offer you vegetarian food to fill your hunger!"

Wang Ping'an was delighted and thought: "Hey, it really works! Good, let's take a look at how the Tang Dynasty's suan pan is made!"

Yang shook his hand and said: "The incense has not been added yet, how can you use rice? That is disrespect to the Buddha!"

The monk's face turned even redder with joy, thinking to himself: "This string of pearls is quite valuable, could it be that I'll get an additional 100 taels? That would be truly wonderful!"

Yang said: "Those beads are the sacred oil that Buddha used to cure my son's illness last time. But Buddha blessed him with more, and he became a young medical god. From now on, we don't have to worry about getting sick again. So I'll add another 1,000 yuan, respectfully offering it to Buddha, asking him to continue blessing my son, hopefully he can become a successful candidate in the imperial examination!"

The monk let out a cool breath, both surprised and delighted. A thousand strings of incense money was no small sum! It was enough to rebuild a large temple! He hastily said: "Thank you, Mr. Yang, your sincerity in worshiping the Buddha will surely be blessed by the Buddha!" After finishing speaking, he invited Yang and Wang Ping'an into the back hall, while he hurriedly left.

The back hall is elegantly decorated, with low tables and yellow satin cushions. The tea sets on the table are neatly arranged, looking like they are specially used for receiving important guests at the Treasure Pagoda Temple.

Wang Ping sat cross-legged on the cushion, saying: "Mother, the monks in this temple are quite enthusiastic, I suppose they have many pilgrims making offerings every day and are used to entertaining guests."

Yang said with some pride: "Although there are many incense guests, those who can add a thousand strings of incense money are few. My son will wait for a moment, the abbot of that temple will come immediately!"

Before she could even finish speaking, a flurry of footsteps was heard from outside, slowing down only when they reached the door. With a Buddhist chant, a stout monk in his forties with a large red robe appeared at the entrance. The fat monk hadn't even entered yet, but his polite words had already arrived, saying: "Ah, so it's Master Yang who has come to our humble temple, I apologize for not greeting you sooner, please forgive me!" As he spoke, he walked in with a smile plastered on his face.

Yang didn't get up, he just slightly nodded and said: "Son, this is the abbot of the temple, Master Huidi Chan, quickly pay your respects!"

Wang Ping'an gave his mother a thumbs up, praising her cleverness and foresight. The host really came. Yang was very pleased. As the saying goes, money can make ghosts grind mills, copper coins can be used to summon ghosts, let alone a humble host.

Wang Ping'an stood up and bowed to Hui De, without saying much.

He had nothing to say, but Huide's words were not few. He came up and looked at Wang Ping'an from top to bottom, suddenly saying: "Ah, ah, Master Wang has a full heavenly court, a square and round earthly palace. Looking at his face, he is the Wenqu star descending from heaven, with great talent in his belly!"

He turned to face Yang and said, "Yang Shizhu, listen to my advice, quickly send Wang Xiaoshizhu to the capital, the earlier he passes the imperial examination, the better he can serve the court, and bring fortune to the people! The earlier Wang Xiaoshizhu becomes an official, the sooner the people will receive his blessings. This is a great virtuous deed. Amitabha, I beg of you on behalf of all the people, Yang Shizhu!"

Wang Ping'an burst out laughing, this monk really knows how to talk, and the flattery is a bit too loud, it's almost deafening!

Although Hui De Ma's flattery was exaggerated, it happened to be what Yang Shi liked to hear the most - she loved others praising her son! Yang Shi nodded and said: "Thank you for your kind words, Master. When my son goes to high school in the future, I will come back to the temple again, add more oil to the lamps, and pray that the Buddha's light will shine forever!"

Hui De's kindness is boundless, and his flattery is like a tidal wave. He has won over the entire Wang family, young and old, with his obsequious behavior. Before long, Su Feng brings in the dishes, and Hui De personally sits down to keep them company, refilling their rice bowls and serving them dishes, treating them with utmost hospitality.

At the banquet, Ms. Yang again mentioned that Wang Ping'an could write prescriptions himself, this glorious thing, she told her relatives and friends dozens of times, each time more perfect than before, now it's really legendary and magnificent!

Hui De was all smiles from start to finish, frequently nodding his head and occasionally chiming in with a few words of praise for Wang Ping'an. Wang Ping'an listened on the side, feeling quite embarrassed - what's going on here? Isn't this just overdoing it?!

Huì Dé Dào said: "It seems that Wang Xiaoshi has obtained a medical book that specializes in treating complex and difficult diseases... Hmm, under the blessing of the Buddha, I wonder if you can lend it to me for a look? To be honest, when our Bǎo Tǎ Temple was first built, its purpose was to treat and rescue the common people. Therefore, there are many medical books in the temple, but they are all too ordinary. Some complex and difficult diseases cannot be treated, which causes suffering for the common people. I wonder if Wang Xiaoshi can lend the book to our temple for a copy, so that we can benefit the people of Xúzhōu?"

Wang Ping'an nodded and thought to himself, "It seems that this monk is not just a flatterer, but also has some kind intentions, actually thinking of treating the common people's illnesses. Hmm, it makes sense, if he were just a city slicker, he wouldn't have been able to become the abbot of this temple."

"He shook his head and said, 'To be honest with you, I couldn't find that medical book, but I still remember some of its contents. If you encounter any difficult or complicated cases in the temple, just tell me about it and I might be able to help you analyze it, but whether it's useful or not, I dare not guarantee!'"

Huide didn't insist on inviting a doctor, and when he heard that Wang Ping'an was willing to help with the diagnosis, he said: "A few days ago, a fellow monk from Longan Temple in the capital came to visit me. My Baota Temple is of the same origin as Longan Temple, so I should have treated him well. However, this fellow monk happened to catch a cold, which was not serious enough to require medical attention and could be treated within the temple..."

Wang Ping'an understood as soon as he heard this, that it must not have been cured yet. It's possible that it was just a cold, but although a cold is a minor illness, it can lead to many major illnesses. Don't underestimate the common cold! He said: "There are many types of wind and cold, I don't know which type you, my esteemed junior brother, have contracted."

Huì Dé thought for a moment and said, "This poor monk doesn't understand much about medicine, only knows how to follow the prescription and grab the medicine. Looking at my junior brother Huì Dé's appearance, his cold and heat are not fixed, it seems... it seems like malaria, but after taking the medicine, his condition didn't improve, instead he became deaf, can't hear any sound!"

Yang slapped his hand and said, "That's because he took the wrong medicine!"
