Chapter 25: Catching a Jerk in the Act

Thankfully, Xu Nuo wasn’t too busy these days. He opened WeChat and sent a message to Yang Haonan.

“Your sister’s here? Then I’ll treat you both to dinner tonight.”

“Cool, drive over and pick us up.”

Xu Nuo suddenly realized having a car would be pretty nice—convenient for going out to eat or stroll around.

“You py for a bit. Tonight, my friend’s coming to have dinner with us. Remember to greet him,” Xu Nuo instructed.

“Ugh, I know already,” Xu Ke grumbled, shaking her head as she leaned against the window to look at the scenery outside.

  “Bro, your spot’s pretty nice.”

“How’s it nice?” Xu Nuo asked casually.

“No one can see what you’re doing, and you get a view of the scenery outside. It’s awesome.”

As expected of siblings—their logic for picking spots was identical.

After staring at the view for a while, Xu Ke got bored and sat down to observe the office. “Bro, I wanna work too.”

Xu Nuo looked at her in shock. What kind of sane person actually wanted to work?

He reached out to feel her forehead. “Are you running a fever?”

“Hey, I’m fine! School’s so boring—working’s way more fun, and you get paid,” Xu Ke said, her eyes gleaming like a money-grubber.

“You’ll change your mind ter,” Xu Nuo said offhandedly, focusing on his work.

Seeing him busy, Xu Ke quieted down, resting her chin in her hand as she watched him work.

To be fair, her brother looked pretty decent when he wasn’t talking. The moment he opened his mouth, she wanted to smack him.

While she was zoning out, a shadow appeared in front of her.

Xu Ke looked up and saw someone standing there. Thinking she’d taken their seat, she hurriedly stood up to give it back.

When she raised her head, her mouth dropped open. “You, you, you…”

  She poked Xu Nuo.

“What’s up?” Xu Nuo didn’t even look up.

“Xu Nuo, is this your girlfriend?” Lin Wanqing’s voice rang out.

Xu Ke froze. Why did it sound like she was here to interrogate someone?

Xu Nuo jolted, turning around. “Senior, what are you doing here? This is my sister.”

“Oh.” Lin Wanqing narrowed her eyes. “Biological sister?”

“Yup, carved from the same mold as me. Don’t we look alike?” Xu Nuo said proudly.

“I’m obviously better-looking,” Xu Ke muttered, unconvinced.

Lin Wanqing blinked. It seemed she’d misunderstood something. The moment she got a tip from Zhao Yuan, she’d dropped everything and rushed over.

She’d heard Xu Nuo was getting cozy with a girl and came specifically to catch him in the act.

When she got the news, Lin Wanqing felt an odd mix of emotions. Part of her wanted to catch him red-handed so her best friend could move on, but another part secretly hoped he wasn’t a jerk.

This conflicting mindset had her agonizing for a while. She’d stood at the door for ages before deciding to come in and see for herself.

And it turned out to be a big misunderstanding.

  “Hi there.”

“Hello, big sister,” Xu Ke said sweetly.

“This is the Lin Wanqing you’ve been dying to meet,” Xu Nuo said, patting Xu Ke’s head. “And this is my sister, Xu Ke.”

Xu Ke’s eyes widened. “For real? I’m meeting her in person! Sister Lin, you’re so pretty!”

“You’re pretty too,” Lin Wanqing said, her mood lifting. Even Xu Nuo started looking less annoying to her.

“Sister Lin, sit down!” Xu Ke pulled her over to sit on the chairs in the corner. The two started chatting quietly, leaving Xu Nuo with nothing to do.

After a while, Lin Wanqing’s phone rang. She apologized to Xu Ke. “I’ve got something to do soon. How about I treat you both to dinner tonight?”

  With that, she hurried off.

Xu Ke sat there stunned, still processing, but Lin Wanqing was already gone.

“Bro, what do we do? Didn’t some guy already say he’d treat us to dinner tonight?”

Xu Nuo snapped out of it too. “No worries, I’ll let Brother Saonan know.”

“Brother Saonan?” Xu Ke teased. “What kind of weird nickname is that? Is your friend even legit?”

Xu Nuo rubbed his chin. Yang Haonan wasn’t exactly the most upright guy. “Just watch out for him ter.”

“I’m not scared. You’d better protect me, or I’ll beat you up,” Xu Ke huffed, raising her fists threateningly.

Xu Nuo chuckled. This girl was loud and fearless at home, but outside, she was surprisingly well-behaved.

She’d been good as gold all afternoon, not causing any trouble.

“Brother Saonan, something came up tonight. Go eat on your own—don’t come pick us up.”

“Alright, I’ll work te then. The first episode of Dragon King Son-in-Law is edited. I’ll show it to you ter.”

Xu Ke leaned over to peek at his phone. “What’s Dragon King Son-in-Law?”

“Grown-up stuff—kids don’t need to know,” Xu Nuo said, pushing her head away and ruffling her hair.

It felt nice, like petting a puppy.

“Hmph, you’re not up to something shady, are you?” Xu Ke’s eyes darted suspiciously.

“Shoo, go py. If you’re hungry, grab some snacks.”

The sky outside darkened gradually. Xu Nuo finished his work, stretched, and yawned.

Turning his head, he saw Xu Ke had fallen asleep, slumped over the desk.

She must’ve been tired. Coming all this way was tough on a young girl.

Xu Nuo’s eyes softened. Though he acted like she was a nuisance, he adored her.

He was never stingy with her allowance or living expenses, always got her gifts for holidays, and never missed her birthday.

And despite her loud, brash attitude, she was actually pretty sensible.

She hadn’t made a peep all afternoon. At home, she’d have turned the pce upside down by now.

The office AC was chilly, so Xu Nuo grabbed a jacket and draped it over her.

A little ter, Lin Wanqing texted that she was waiting in the parking lot. Xu Nuo patted Xu Ke’s head. “Wake up.”

Xu Ke rubbed her eyes groggily, letting out a cute yawn. “Off work?”

  “Yup. Pack up—time to eat.”

  “Where’s Sister Lin?”

“Waiting for you in the parking lot.”

Xu Ke perked up. “Bro, grab me a notebook. I want her autograph!”

“Take one from the desk yourself.”

Xu Nuo hauled the suitcase to the parking lot and found the car Lin Wanqing mentioned. He knocked on the window.

The window rolled down, revealing Lin Wanqing in the driver’s seat. “Get in.”

Xu Nuo hesitated, then pushed Xu Ke into the passenger seat and took the back himself.

“Sister Lin, you’re even prettier after a little while!”

Lin Wanqing couldn’t help but ugh. “Such a sweet talker. Did you learn that from your brother?”

“Pfft, my brother’s a total stiff. He’d never say nice things,” Xu Ke scoffed.

Lin Wanqing gnced at Xu Nuo through the corner of her eye. “Heh, your brother’s no stiff.”

“Senior, don’t ruin my reputation,” Xu Nuo said helplessly.

Xu Ke’s big eyes darted between them. The “senior” title was suspicious enough.

“Sister Lin, how’d you meet my brother?” Xu Ke asked, her gossip mode activated.

Lin Wanqing started the car. “He didn’t tell you?”

“We met at the school graduation party.”

“Ohh, got it,” Xu Ke said, her gaze bouncing between Lin Wanqing and her brother. Suddenly, she giggled.

Having a sister-in-w would be so cool.
