Chapter 6: The Fish of Sudden Death

I and Yang Xu are having a great time catching here, today we caught about 30 or 40 in just half an hour. Its basically enough. But if we go back now, Lao Jia and Lao Zhang will make us work like slaves again, so its better to stay here and pretend to be busy to have some leisure time. Im chatting with Yang Xu from time to time.

He said to me, "Hey, you know? It seems like Yang Lei from our class and that kid from Class 1 have broken up." I was washing my hands at the time, but when he said this, I burst out laughing. So I teased him: "I say, Yin Ge, wow, your news is really up-to-date! Are you secretly in love with her? Be honest with me, do you go to see her every day?"

Yang Xues face turned red with anxiety, and he stuttered slightly as he spoke. "Who, who is following me? If Im going to follow someone, Id at least find someone good-looking."

The more I look at him, the more interesting he becomes. Smiling, I say "I dont believe it."

He said: "Honestly, if I had taken a liking to her, you could have splashed water on me and it would have been fine."

Ive never heard of such a request in my life, so I picked up the water and splashed it on his head. The yin-yang person didnt react until he was already drenched, then he started to counterattack. But with my agile footsteps, could he possibly splash me? I dodged back a few times and escaped his attack range. Just as I was running away laughing at him, the cup slipped out of my hand.

Our ancestors said a good phrase, extreme joy begets sorrow. I stepped on something and fell, my whole body was submerged in the water. I even choked on several mouthfuls of water. Yang Xu saw me fall and hurried over to help me up, after coughing out the water, I cursed: "Damn it, what kind of slippery thing is this." When I looked down, I saw a frog that had been trampled into mush. Yang Xu took one look and laughed, saying I deserved it, this was karma.

I was speechless, and with this gloominess in my heart, I didnt have the mood to catch frogs anymore. So, Yang Xu and I went ashore and used plastic bags to pack up those dead frogs. Those girls were sitting by a small pile of charcoal fire eating snacks, looking at our dripping wet figures, and burst out laughing saying: "You two took a mandarin duck bath ah?"

After seeing their faces, I regret not spitting on the toad earlier. Let them eat it. Old Jia and Old Zhang just went to pee and when they came back, they saw us like this and laughed: "You two are going to wash the mandarin ducks?"

I regretted it again in my heart, why didnt I pee in the white wine they drank earlier.

Suddenly I was shaking all over, my whole body was wet, it was really cold. I asked Yang Xu if he was cold, Yang Xu said no, youre just cold because youre weak. I scolded him, saying "You and your whole family are the ones who are weak!"

Old Zhang had tidied up the frogs and applied seasonings, then strung them on iron wire and roasted them over a fire along with sausages and other things. Before long, a savory aroma of roasted meat wafted through the air. Everyone present had been crazy for an entire morning and was already famished. Upon smelling the aroma, they couldnt help but swallow their saliva. Old Jia smiled and brought out beer and white wine, saying to everyone: "Lets get started, what are we waiting for?" In fact, even if he hadnt said anything, we would have all begun eating anyway. Since everyone was having a great time, the girls also drank alcohol. Although these girls usually appeared elegant and refined, once they got drunk, they became incredibly rowdy, grabbing frogs and shoving them into their mouths without even removing the heads. I must say, I admired their boldness - at this point, all semblance of femininity was gone. As they ate, they cursed: "Damn, its really hot."

After a while, I got a bit drunk and my head was spinning. Suddenly, I had the urge to pee. People who drink beer know that theres such a thing as "drunken liver" and "drunken kidney". Unfortunately, Im one of those "drunken kidney" types. After drinking, I have to go to the bathroom several times. So, in a daze, I got up to go pee somewhere far away. The girls behind me were still chattering away, telling me to catch some more frogs because there wasnt enough food.

I cursed in my heart: catch a fart, if you want to catch it, you have to pee first and then give it to you. I walked dazedly for a while, turned back to look, far enough, already couldnt see them, so I unbuttoned my pants and peed into the puddle by the river. After finishing, I shivered with cold as usual. Hmm? Guess what I saw?

A big fish is trapped in this bubble. What a huge carp, at least one meter long. Maybe its because it hasnt rained recently, the water in the river has receded, and its been trapped in this bubble. Haha, if I take this fish back and say I caught it while swimming in the river, those girls will definitely be amazed. By then, my "ability to catch turtles in the five oceans" will spread throughout the school, and those beauties will rush to my side. Its true that when youre drunk, you think of all sorts of impossible things. As I thought about these impossible things, I jumped into the water.

But with the stimulation of the cold water, I suddenly woke up and found that what was supposed to be shallow water had become deep and bottomless. The water had risen above my head, causing me to choke on several mouthfuls of water. Luckily, I had learned a few strokes of dog paddle, so my legs kicked out frantically and I floated back up to the surface. When my head broke through the waters surface, I realized that this was not a shallow pool - it was a river! I shouted for help at the top of my lungs, but then I felt something grab hold of my foot and start pulling me back underwater with incredible force. Yang Xue and Old Jia, who were eating and drinking in the distance, seemed to have heard my voice and were running towards me, but it was too late. The thing holding onto my foot pulled my head back under the water, and the icy river water poured into my throat. My consciousness began to fade as I struggled underwater. I saw a figure standing on the shore - an old woman in white clothes and hat, smiling sinisterly at me. Then I lost consciousness.

  Heres the translation:

When it comes to fish, Id like to explain something to everyone. In many folk legends, water ghosts find substitutes by transforming into large fish trapped in shallow pools of water. If passersby have weak fire energy on their bodies or are experiencing a unlucky year, they will be deceived by this illusion and jump into the water to catch fish. What appears to be shallow water is actually extremely deep.

It seemed like I had slept for a long time before I woke up, and after opening my eyes, I saw the gray sky. Am I not dead? After getting up, I found that my body was still dry, but I didnt know where this place was! Because Ive never been here before. At first glance, its a street, but there are no shops on the roadside, and the passing vehicles make no sound, shaking slightly, as if made of paper. On both sides of the road, however, there were still some pedestrians, most of whom wore black clothes of roughly the same style. I seemed to have seen this brand somewhere before, but I couldnt remember it after thinking about it for a while. They walked along the street in the same direction with their heads down, also without any sound. The whole street was eerily quiet. At first, I thought my ears were plugged up, but when I clapped my hands together, I heard a clear slapping sound.

Wait, no. Didnt I fall into the water? Wasnt it Yang Xu and them who saved me? But where are they? And shouldnt I be in the hospital? Is this... underwater? The Dragon Palace?? No way, theres no water here either. Which part looks like the Dragon Palace? Did I really cross over?

When I was in high school, the internet was just becoming popular, and my friends and I were also the ones who didnt pay attention to our hands during class. Every day, I would hold "I am a Great Master" and indulge in fantasies by myself. At that time, when I woke up, I really thought I had traveled through time, but unlike those calm protagonists of time-traveling stories, I felt scared instead, because it was too quiet here, and no matter how I asked those black-clad pedestrians, they just ignored me, at most giving me a glance with their eyes before continuing on their way.

Wait, black clothes? Damn it, I remembered! This familiar black clothing, when I was in school and passed by a flower shop, I often saw people inside the store hanging these clothes! These are mourning clothes!

One spirit leaves the body, two souls ascend to heaven - thats probably a description of me. You can imagine it: when you suddenly wake up and find yourself in an unfamiliar place, and the people around you are all wearing mourning clothes and walking in front of you. What would you think? I believe eighty percent of people would think theyre dead. But I didnt - after all, Im quite fond of living, so Id rather believe Ive traveled through time than that Im dead. Now thinking back to my high school days, its still a bit too early for me to believe in ghosts, but Id rather believe in the existence of Wu Lei, Iron Man, Ninja Turtles, and Teletubbies.
