Chapter 89 - The Monster With Five Hearts

For a heartbeat, the battlefield fell silent.

Alya, Cael, and Rian hovered in the air—

their threefold resonance still pulsing between their joined hands—

  staring at the fallen Devourer.

  And then—

the second corrupted core inside its chest

lit up like a rising star of black fire.

  The Devourer didn't stand.

  It floated,

  rising unnaturally,

  as stone pieces reattached themselves,

held together by tendrils of shadow.

  Alya's voice cracked:

  "...It's regenerating."

  Cael exhaled shakily.

  "Of course it is."

Rian scraped blood from his mouth.

  "Perfect.

  Just perfect."

  The Devourer's voice deepened,

echoing like it came from under the earth:

  "ONE CORE CANNOT SUSTAIN ME.

  BUT FIVE?

  FIVE MAKE A GOD."

  Alya's blood went cold.

  Cael's grip tightened.

  Rian whispered:

  "There are five phases..."

  Aster shouted from below, horrified:

  "That creature—

it holds ALL FIVE elemental cores!

  Corrupted... twisted...

  but intact!"

  Ren shrieked:

"WHY DOES EVERYTHING HAVE FIVE OF SOMETHING—

  WHO DESIGNED THIS SYSTEM—"

Eris smacked her on the head.

  Lami whimpered.

  Mila clung to her.

  The Seal's voice thundered:

  "THE DEVOURER CANNOT BE DESTROYED.

IT IS BOUND TO THE ROOTS."

  Alya stiffened.

  Cael whispered:

  "...Then we lose?"

  Rian snarled.

  "Not happening."

  But the Seal completed:

  "IT MUST BE PURIFIED."

  Silence.

  Alya stared.

  "You mean...

  save it?"

  The Seal lowered its head.

"THERE WAS ONCE A BEING LIKE YOU—

If you discover this tale on Amazon, be aware that it has been unlawfully taken from Royal Road. Please report it.

  A TRIAD—

WHO TRIED TO KILL THE DEVOURER."

  The forest seemed to freeze.

  "THEY FAILED."

A chill raced up Ayla's spine.

  Rian's voice dropped:

  "...What happened to them?"

  The Seal's glow dimmed.

  "THE TRINITY WAS CORRUPTED.

  THEY BECAME DEVOURERS THEMSELVES."

  The Triad Wavers

  Alya's knees nearly buckled mid-air.

  Cael caught her.

  Rian steadied Cael.

  Their triangle flickered.

  Alya whispered:

"If we try to destroy it...

  we'll become it..."

  Cael swallowed hard.

"And if we don't destroy it..."

  Rian finished:

  "We die."

Alya's hands trembled as she gripped both of theirs.

  "No.

  No—there must be another way—"

The Devourer lifted its second core,

  shrouded in black water resonance,

and aimed its hands at Ayla.

  "HEART.

  YOU WILL BREAK FIRST."

Cael stepped in front of her instantly.

  Rian stepped beside him.

  The Triad barrier formed automatically—

  but flickered.

  Alya grit her teeth.

  "Cael—Rian—

  hold on—

  I can stabilize us—"

  Rian snapped sharply:

  "You stabilize Cael,

  I stabilize YOU."

  Cael rasped:

  "And I—

  I'll keep your heart steady."

  Alya blinked back tears.

  "Why do you two... always—"

  Cael gave the smallest smile.

  "Because we love you."

  Rian rolled his eyes.

  "Speak for yourself—

I'm here so you don't both die."

But Ayla felt it through the Link.

  Even now—

  in the middle of terror—

  Rian's heart was open.

  More open than ever.

  The Devourer's Second Assault

  The second core fired.

A tidal wave of black, corrupted water

  roared toward them.

  Not liquid.

  Gravity.

  Pressure.

  Drowning magic.

Alya's breath caught in her throat.

  "THAT'S NOT WATER—"

  Cael shouted:

  "Brace—!!"

  Rian hissed:

  "We're gonna black out—"

The Triad barrier took the hit.

  CRRRRRACK—

  It fractured instantly.

Alya screamed as the pressure crushed her ribs.

Cael gasped, collapsing to one knee mid-air.

  Rian's hand slipped—

Alya grabbed him before he fell.

  "NO—

  Rian—stay with me—

  STAY—"

  His voice slurred.

  "I'm—fine—

  don't cry—"

  She was.

Tears ran down her cheeks as she held both of them together.

Cael shook violently, eyes losing focus.

  "Too much...

  A-Ayla... I'm—losing—"

  He began to fold forward.

Alya caught his face in both hands.

  "NO.

  Cael—look at me—

  look at me—"

  His pupils shrank.

  Rian grabbed Cael's arm, snarling:

  "Stay awake, you idiot—

  she needs you—!"

  Cael choked out:

  "I—I'm trying—

  but the pressure—

  it's crushing me—"

  Alya's heart cracked.

  "No—

  no—

  no—

  I won't let you go—

  I WON'T—"

  Alya Takes the Burden

She tore the Triad Link open—

And dragged all of Cael's pain into herself.

Cael collapsed against her shoulder, gasping in relief.

  Rian screamed:

  "AYLA—WHAT ARE YOU DOING—?!

  YOU CAN'T TAKE THAT ALONE—!"

  Alya sobbed:

  "I won't let him break—

  I WON'T—"

  Her body convulsed.

  Her aura warped.

  Her vision dimmed.

  Her heartbeat doubled in speed.

  Cael lifted his head weakly.

  "A—Ayla stop—

  stop—

  STOP—"

  Rian grabbed her wrist.

  "Don't do this—

  YOU'LL DIE—"

  Alya's voice trembled violently.

  "I'd rather die

than let either of you suffer."

  The Devourer paused—

  watching her—

  almost curious.

  Cael cried out:

  "Ayla—

  you're burning—look at your aura—

  your light—

  it's tearing—"

  Her golden-white glow

  flickered

  black.

  Rian's eyes widened in horror.

  "...She's corrupting—

  just like the old Triad—

  Alya STOP—PLEASE—"

  Alya choked out:

  "No—

  No—this can't be—

  I won't become that—

  I won't—"

  Her knees gave out.

  Cael caught her again, shaking.

Rian held her up from the other side.

  Alya whispered, voice breaking:

  "I'm... losing it."

Cael pressed his forehead to hers.

  "No.

  You're not—

  we're right here—

  you're not alone—"

  Rian gripped her hand tightly.

  "Ayla—focus—

  we're linked—

  so let us share it—

  ALL of it—

that's what the Link is FOR!"

  Alya sobbed.

  "I'm...

  scared..."

  Rian's voice cracked.

  "So am I."

  Cael whispered:

  "But we're scared together.

  And that's enough."

  Alya closed her eyes.

  And something inside her shifted.

  She released just enough weight

  for Cael to stabilize,

  and Rian to anchor her.

  The Triad aligned again.

  Barely.

  Damaged.

  But alive.

  The Devourer Realizes the Truth

  The creature hissed:

  "YOU CANNOT DESTROY ME.

EVEN YOUR TRIAD CANNOT HOLD THIS POWER."

  Alya breathed hard.

"We're not here to destroy you."

  Cael steadied his breath.

  "We're here to transform you."

  Rian wiped his mouth.

"You ugly, stone-faced disaster of a monster."

Alya, Cael, and Rian pressed their palms forward.

  Their triangle glowed again.

  And the Devourer froze.

  "NO—

  YOU WOULD DARE—

  PURIFY ME—?!"

  Alya whispered:

  "Yes."
