The Weekend Part I

Jack smiled at Adam as the two were watching the first episode of the Battlestar Galactica miniseries. “Huh... the guy who plays Baltar kind of looks and sounds like Dr. Bashir from DS9.” Adam leaned closer to the TV to look at the man on the screen. “Oh yeah, the two look very similar, they could be brothers.” Jack was sweating; he was worried about whether James would make good on his threats if he tried anything. He decided to test his luck. “So that female Cylon, she sure is hot, right?” Adam shrugged, “I guess so, if you are into that kind of thing.” Jack perked up and slid his hand closer to Adam. "Oh... what are you into?” Adam smiled, “I’m more into guys.” Jack blushed, “So am I, Adam.... and I really like you as more than a friend.” Adam blushed, “You do? I really like you that way as well.” The two then reached for each other's hands, and Adam put his hand on Jack’s cheek. “I've always wanted to say that but never got the chance.” He then leaned closer for a kiss.

Jack’s eyes fluttered open; he was lying in his bed on his side, looking at his signed Doctor Who: The Movie poster. A little bit of drool had puddled on his bed. He sighed and turned on his back. “What a wonderful dream, but it was only a dream.” He pulled himself out of bed and walked to his private bathroom. He sighed as he looked in the bathroom mirror and washed his face. In reality, nothing particularly interesting happened that night. The truth was that they watched the two-part miniseries and then played some Call of Duty: World at war co- op. Adam loved the fact that you could kill nazis in a video game; it was a good time, but nothing crazy had happened. That, of course, didn't stop his mind from dreaming that it did. He finished washing his face and went into his walk-in closet, which was a huge closet bigger than his entire bedroom back home, complete with a mirror and filled with so many designer clothes his size. Mom insisted that, since they were one percenters, they should dress the part. He pulled on a short-sleeved Ralph Lauren polo shirt and shorts, along with some sandals. It was springtime in California, so the temperature was perfect.

He came out of the show and went back to his bedside to look at his droid phone. He had three messages, the first was from Cassidy: “Hey, lover boy, did you have a great time?” The second was from Adam, “Hey man, I had a great time.” Jack smiled and texted back, “I did too, friend.” The third was from a number he had never seen before: “Call me now!” Jack rolled his eyes, put the phone in his shorts pocket, and went downstairs for some breakfast. He walked down to the kitchen and sat down at the sizable kitchen table where a large African American man was busy at the stove, frying up some pancakes. “Hello, Jack, want some blueberry pancakes today?” Jack nodded “Yeah that and some orange juice Martin, would be great” he smiled as he started to cook “Well I’m glad someone ordered breakfast today, all your mom had was a bowl cereal and a grapefruit... oh she said she wants to see, she told me to tell you she will be out on the tennis court all morning” He started to read a nearby paper of the Los Angeles daily news and saw a small headline in the corner that read “USC tenured professor sentenced to community service for drunken disorderly” “Huh... yeah that explains it” After his pancakes came he started to eat them and looked down at his phone and texted Cassidy back “Yeah it went well... how did your date go?”. A moment later she heard a reply “It went good, better than I expected” He smiled and sipped his orange juice.

After he finished eating, he made his way across the house and through the back door. He took his circular sunglasses out of his breast pocket and put them on, and then followed the cobblestone path down to the tennis court area. At times like this, he was reminded how large the estate was. Along the path, there were two long hedges on either side of the pathway. He could barely see over the large hedges, but the rest of the estate was huge; it was more land than they could ever use. Of course, despite being multi-millionaires, his mom, ever the wheeler and dealer, got the previous owners down to 90 million dollars from the original 150 million dollar asking price. Mary Lyn Bouvier McCoy had always been that way. Daughter of a subsistence Apalachin farmer, she knew what it was like to have nothing. Every time she bought something, it was never at full price; she was always looking for a sale, and when there was no sale, she made one. One time, they needed a new TV when their old tube TV died. She went into that Best Buy and not only got a new plasma screen TV for 50% off, but also got a free DVD player. Mary got them down by her sheer force of personality and negotiation tactics. It is something that she brought to her company as well. Despite having no college education, she was incredibly gifted with numbers and sheer willpower, with a little help from her brother-in-law, Bill, and her best friend, who helped set up the billion-dollar company that stands today in less than a year. It was amazing how fast it went; it proved she had the ambition and the smarts. All it took was a little luck and a little black gold. She always remembered who helped her, giving them positions within the new company. This nepotism was both a strength and a weakness; she trusted people, perhaps a little too much in some cases.
